Installing services without a Windows server
Remember: If you are installing third party servers (from the web links in Resources) on a Windows system equipped with the Windows Firewall, or other firewalls, you will have to manually open the required ports on the firewall to allow these services to function by adding ports to the exclusion lists of firewall. The DNS server uses Port 53 of both UDP and TCP protocols. The DHCP server uses Port 67 of both UDP and TCP protocols. All 4 ports (UDP and TCP) need to be added separately.

Action / DetailsLocate SANS at the Posadis web site (see Resources) / Under the Posadis programs section, locate Sans (Simple Authoritative DNS Server for Windows) and click on the link.
Download / In the description of the DNS server there is a link where the installation program can be downloaded. Locate this link and click on it.
Click on a suitable mirror site to download the installation file. (Approximate file size is 1 MB)
Install / Run the installation file and install using the default options.
Configure / Start SANS from the last page of the installer or through the Start menu
Click on the Edit zones tab
Add the New Primary zone local.mywork.com.au
Right-Click in the Resource Records area and select Add new, A – Address
Insert Gateway. In front of local in the Domain name field. Don’t miss the dot after the ‘y’.
Enter 192.168.0.100 in the IPv4 address field and click OK
Test / From a command prompt enter the command nslookup Gateway.local.mywork.com.au 127.0.0.1 and verify that the correct IP address is returned for Gateway.

Action / DetailsLocate DHCP Turbo for Windows at the Tucows web site (see Resources) / Search for DHCP Server Free in Windows and locate DHCP Turbo for Windows in the results and click on the product link.
Download / From the Download Now section of the web site, click on one of the operating systems (They are all the same link).
Scroll down and click on a suitable mirror site to download the installation file. (Approximate file size is 5.5 MB)
Install / Run the installation file and install using the default options.
Configure / Start DHCP Turbo from the Start menu—(Start All Programs, Weird Solutions)
Double-Click on the localhost server and log in with no password
Add a New Scope by right-clicking on the Scopes entry. Call it My Work with an address range from 192.168.0.170 to 192.168.0.180 with Subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and click OK
Click on the My Work scope to check the settings. By default no additional information is sent to a client so some needs to be added to the Policies tab.
Right-Click in the window of the Policies tab and enter New Options of:
- Gateways
- Domain Names Servers
Test / Configure a different computer on your network to obtain its IP configuration automatically.
From a command prompt enter the command ipconfig/all and verify that the IP information has been obtained from the DHCP Turbo server.
