5S Newsletter

Religion:

Fifth grade recently gave Eucharistic presentationsfor their study of Chapter 10 “Jesus Christ, the Bread of Life.” Now they are learning about the celebration of the Eucharist through prayers of the Mass in Chapter 11. This spring they study the sacraments of healing more in depth and review common forms of prayer in the Church, like the Rosary.

Catholic Schools Week is Jan. 29-Feb. 3, and QAS students can participate in a variety of ways. Our Lady’s Inn Donations for Catholic Schools Week is the charity drive ongoing throughout the week. 5th should bring personal care items in the spirit of generosity and drop them off in the school foyer. More information for CSW is in the calendar.

5S will have the all-school Mass on Friday, Feb. 24, and 5F on Fri. March 3. Please join if you are able!

Science:

5th grade continues through its study of the Earth and its Resources. So far we have studied layers of Earth, volcanoes, earthquakes, seismic waves, chemical weathering, and erosion. Minerals, rocks, soil, air, and water will be the topics coming soon as we explore the Earth’s many resources. The class enjoys their lab days as they complete explore activities to model the processes of Earth science, and practice their skills of predicting, observing, and evaluating the outcomes of their experiments.

Social Studies:

Fifth has been studying the U.S. Constitution in Chapter 9. They recently made timelines depicting the events leading to the ratification of the Constitution, and they have evaluated the Articles of Confederation as a plan of government and contrasted it with the Constitutional system. There will be a Chapter 9 test in February.

Then JA, a program featuring Economics, will start later in February & March.

January: Perseverance

Perseveranceis our character trait at QAS forJanuary. The class will complete an activity and discuss what it means to persevere. Perseverance is important not onlyin study, but in life actions, and in prayer too. When we persevere we know God is with us, and we don’t get discouraged when our lives go unexpectedly. Ordinary time is a good season of the Church in which to pray for the gift of perseverance in the faith.

“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, persevere in prayer.”–Romans 12:12

“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” - James 1:12

February: Compassion

Compassion will be the virtue of the month throughout February. Many of the saints are known for practicing compassion. Compassion means to be kind to assist others, to build up the Church, and to do good even to those who are not able to pay us back, for our true reward is to be foundwith God in heaven. When we are compassionate to others, we spread God’s love in the world. The class will discuss compassion as a whole and tell ways to bring compassion to the world through their daily lives.

“Yet the LORD longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion. For the LORD is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!”-Isaiah 38:10
