Course Description:
The course provides a comprehensive examination of the basic and critical issues in public health for pharmacists. The course content includes a basic knowledge base of public health issues, an exploration of the various roles that pharmacy can provide in offering public health services, and examples of applications to pharmacy practice. Issues in public health care are examined from both the pharmacy perspective and the traditional public health viewpoint.
Course Goals:
-To provide the student with an overview of public health
-To develop an appreciation for the interplay between pharmacy and public health in the U.S.health care system
Course Outcomes:
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
-analyze and evaluate health care situations in terms of the public health factors that play a role in health and illness behaviors. (Possible Institutional Outcome = Thinking and Decision-Making)
-apply historical, social, economic, and cultural differences in explaining the public health approach to health care. (Possible Institutional outcome = Historical and Cultural Consciousness)
Performance Criteria:
-accurately describes the public health approach being applied in a given situation
-applies public health concept(s) in a manner that illustrates or demonstrates the usefulness in the particular case or situation
-analyzes different public health approaches by comparing and contrasting (strengths and weaknesses) in various pharmacy situations
-evaluates and/or critiques various public health approaches in terms of their usefulness and value in various pharmacy situations
Grading:
Exams will be comprehensive, but will emphasize the most recent material covered in the course. A make-up exam may be allowed for those with legitimate medical or personal excuses, but must be scheduled prior to the next exam. Failure to take the make-up exam will result in a grade of zero for that exam.

(NOTE TO INSTRUCTOR: the concept papers are “homework” where the student uses classes concepts. The ability to rewrite works very well here, because the student can redo the paper when the concepts are used incorrectly, thus learning the concepts if he/she wishes a higher grade. In larger classes, the use of “group papers” can be very effective. The entire group gets the grade and can rewrite. While not every student might write every paper, concepts are often re-used
Class participation will be determined by attendance, written assignments, web activities, and classroom behavior. For example, poor attendance or lack of participation in class discussion may result in a loss of participation points.
The Student Code and Handbook will be followed in the class.
Grades will be given as follows: A (100-93), A- (92-90),B+ (89-87), B (86-83), B- (82-80), C+ (79-77), C (76-73),C- (72-70), D+ (69-67), D (66-63), D- (62-60), F (below 60).

Guidelines for Concept Reports
During the class, you will be reading the Introduction to Public Health in Pharmacytextbook, and you will complete four reports that apply concepts from class/text to real health care situations.
You will need to incorporate information from current events to complete these reports.
DESIRED RESULT: Make certain that you demonstrate your knowledge of the public health concepts in your paper.
GUIDELINES:
Each report should be about two typed pages. Please submit electronically if possible - post on Blackboard.
You should use at least ten concepts/topics/theories from class to receive the highest grade. Use these concepts in a way that demonstrates your understanding, rather than simply listing them or indicating that they might apply.
References, including page numbers, from the textbook should be used.
You may rewrite these reports throughout the semester.
Grading for Concept Paper
