CADET TEACHING

COURSE REQUIREMENTS/ GRADING / RULES / BEHAVIOR

Cadet Teaching is a class for seniors who are working on a college prep diploma and who think they may be interested in becoming teachers. The first semester is spent in class learning about things such as writing lesson plans, classroom discipline, teaching methods, classroom procedures, and professionalism. The second semester the student spends five days a week with an elementary or junior high classroom teacher getting some practical teaching experience.

Cadet Teaching provides students an opportunity to see education from a teacher’s perspective. The course emphasizes the Learner – students learn about themselves, learning styles, team building, and stages of child development; the School-students study the organization of schools and the history of education in the state; and the Teaching - students study methodology and teaching lessons to peers. Finally the cadet teacher completes field experience at one of the elementary campuses or at the junior high.

YOUR GRADE IN THIS COURSE WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE FOLLOWING FACTORS:

I. TESTS/QUIZZES:

Quizzes will be given over each chapter of the textbook, “How to Be an Effective Teacher: The First Days of School” by Harry K. Wong & Rosemary T. Wong”. A Unit test will be given after completion of Unit A, Unit B, Unit C, Unit D, and Unit E. A final exam will be given at the end of the first semester. There are no quizzes, tests or final exam second semester.

II. CLASS WORK:

Class work will include such things as your notebook, daily bell ringers, group activities, class projects over each chapter, class lecture notes, video notes, and vocabulary words for each chapter. You are required to keep an organized Cadet Teaching 3-ring notebook with labeled dividers. The notebook is graded after completion of each unit of study. It is your responsibility to see me before or after class about missed daily work. During the second semester you are required to keep a time log and a Journal/Reflective Essay of each day in the classroom. Time Log and Journals/Reflective Essays are due every Monday BEFORE school starts. Your mentor teacher will assign you a student teaching grade every three weeks during the second semester.

III. PARTICIPATION, ATTITUDE, AND CONDUCT IN CLASS:

You are expected to participate in class discussions. Your attitude and behavior is expected to be positive and enthusiastic.

CLASSROOM RULES AND BEHAVIOR:

1. Be on time for class and in your seat when the bell rings. If there is bell ringer/assignment posted on the overhead, begin work immediately.

2. No talking after the bell rings. If you have something you wish to say or ask, raise your hand and wait to be called on by the teacher.

3. You must bring your 3-ring Cadet Teaching Notebook with dividers, paper, pen, and pencil to class EVERYDAY.

4. Follow all school rules and show respect to the staff and to your peers.

5. Remember the Golden Rule: Do unto teachers, as you would want them to do unto you.

I HAVE READ THE ABOVE COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING AND CLASSROOM RULES AND BEHAVIOR FOR CADET TEACHING. I AGREE THAT I WILL STRIVE TO ACHIEVE EACH REQUIREMENT TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY.
