How to Apply to Tsinghua International School

Overview

①Make an appointment by phone or email to have a campus tour and initial interview with admissions officer.

②Campus tour and initial interview with admissions officer.

③If the student passes the initial interview, we will invite the student and parents to schedule a date for testing and interviews with administrators.

④Download the application form from the THIS website or pick one up from the admissions office. Be sure to bring the application and all required materials, including application fee, on the test date. (The checklist is included at the end of this document.)[t1]

⑤Testing requirements:

a.Student Interview with primary school director for 40 minutes
Student Interview with admission officer for 20 minutes
Parent Interview with admission officer for 20 minutes

b.Student testing with ESL teacher for 60 minutes
Student Interview with admissions officer for 20 minutes
Parent Interview with admissions officer for 20 minutes

c.Student testing with ESL teacher for 60 minutes
Student interview with admissions officer for 20 minutes
Student math test for 60 minutes
Parent Interview with admissions officer for 20 minutes

⑥The admissions office will inform the candidate of the school’s decision within one week

⑦The admissions office will prepare a school packet for students within two weeks[t2], including the official admission letter. It includes the following materials:

a.Admission Letter

b.Bank Card

c.Lunch Card

d.Enrolment Agreement

e.School Bus information

f.Student Card (pending receipt from Tsinghua University Card Office)

g.Student Insurance

If the packet takes longer than expected, the admissions office will alert the parents when it is ready.

The student must submit and sign all the required documents and pay the tuition fee before he is officially enrolled into the school.

If the student is admitted after school has started, the student must pay the tuition fee no later than 10 days after enrollment.

⑧Within two days of receipt of official admissions packet, the school will schedule an orientation with the student.

During the orientation, the student will

oMeet with the respective division director (Janet or Maureen),

oTour the school facilities,

oMeet the school counselor,

oMeet classroom or grade-level teachers, if possible,

oDiscuss PE uniforms and supplies,

oReceive PowerSchool login information,

oStudents in G9-11 will take a math placement test and choose electives.

oSet a start date (if after the school year has begun).

Appendix A

Checklist of required documents

Send the application materials to school email account: [t3]. Materials must be received on or before the candidate’s testing date.

1. Student identification:

Copies of foreign passport, valid Chinese visa page, and temporary residency registration from Beijing local police department; or,
Copies of Hong Kong or Macau ID, travel document to mainland China and temporary residency registration from Beijing local police department; or,

Copies of Taiwan travel document to mainland China and temporary residency registration from Beijing local police department.
Tsinghua International School does not accept students who cannot provide any of documents listed above. Students must have at least one of the documents listed above in order to be considered as candidates.

2. Application form:

The application form is available to download from the THIS website, Parents must bring it and sign it on the testing date.

3. Enrollment Agreement:

Parents and student need to complete and sign on the enrolment agreement.

4. Photographs:
Three copies of a recent passport photo (2 inches, white background)

5. Performance records:

Elementary school applicants

a.The most recent copy of the school report card with teacher comments.

b.Recommendation letters[t4]
If the student cannot provide a report card before the school start date, the admissions office can only send out a conditional acceptance letter. Students must bring an original report card within two weeks of the start of school.

Secondary school applicants

a.The most recent copy of the candidate’s school report card/transcript.

b.Two recommendation letters: one from a math and one from another academic teacher.

c.G11: at least two-year transcript

d.Secondary students accepted from abroad must complete a Skype interview and submit a writing sample with teacher’s comments. The writing sample must be taken in a final, mid-term exam or other proctored session.

6.Personal ID from both parents
Most recent diploma records from parents

7.Immunization records.

8.Certificates, honors, awards from other associations or clubs

9.Application Fee:
1000 RMB non-refundable application fee in cash
The application fee only applies to those students who have been asked to schedule a testing date.
