ODYSSEY Archetype Maps

Assignment: For each main book we read for the Odyssey, you will be making an archetype map which includes the archetypes, characters, connections, and prominent literary elements from that section. The steps below will guide you through this process. The purpose of this assignment is to give you a visual to help you understand and find the archetypes in the Odyssey in order to prepare for a written analysis.

Step 1 Create the central image.

ü  Write the name of the book at the top of your page. (Ex. Book 5: Calypso…)

ü  In the center of your page, illustrate a predominant character archetype(s) (not Odysseus, ANOTHER main one) from that section and label it/them using archetypes rather than by name(s).

ü  Make the central image colorful and large enough to see the subject at a glance.

Step 2 Identify Literary Elements.

ü  Draw smaller images or symbols or write words/phrases around the central image that help explain:

o  Required items to add:

§  archetypes (situational, symbolic, character, color, number, nature, etc.)

§  allusions

§  epic similes

§  epithets

o  Optional items to add:

§  plot (what is going on)

§  setting (where is it taking place)

§  characters (who is involved)

§  conflicts (what conflicts are occurring)

ü  Connect the other images to the central image and/or to each other. You can use arrows, words, or a combination of both.

ü  Use quotes from the text to demonstrate or support the literary elements on your map. Cite PER quote. For example, if you want to cite line 3 in Book 5, the internal citation would be (5.3). If there are multiple lines, the citation should look something like (5.3-5).

Step 3 Analyze Epic Themes/Hero Cycle

ü  On the map, also identify a theme and the step in the Hero Cycle.

o  For theme:

Create a theme statement. (1 sentence)

Explain the theme as it relates to the story (1 sentence)

Provide evidence to support the theme statement (one piece of cited evidence from the text)

o  For the step in the Hero Cycle:

Identify the step in the cycle.

Explain the step as it relates to the story (1 sentence)

Provide evidence to support the step in the cycle (one piece of cited evidence from the text)

Archetype Maps Required

Check off the maps you complete as you go. After turning them in, you need to SAVE them to use as a study guide. Use the online textbook for supporting evidence (quotes) on your maps.

Grading for your archetype maps:

20 points total for each map. See rubric for grading breakdown.

Citing your evidence:

Use MLA citations guidelines for recording page numbers correctly. For epic poetry, use the book number and line number(s). For example, if your evidence is from Book 10, lines 11-15, your internal citation should look like this: (10.11-15). Notice that you do not write the words “book” or “line(s)”. Also notice, the book number and line number(s) are separated by a PERIOD. There are NO spaces when you type the citation.
