Activities:

Grants:

Through our literary grants program, we gave 14 grants for a total of $5,834.00. Affiliates received 6 grants and non-affiliates received 8 grants for events that included author visits, one-book events, book festivals and a writer’s workshop. Ann Arbor Book Festival (www.aabookfestival.org/)

With the Library of Michigan, we exhibited at the Ann Arbor Book Festival on Saturday, May 19th. We provided information on Center for the Book resources and Michigan literary information to festivalgoers. We also hosted three Notable Book author visits during the day, for Lee Boisvert, editor of Keewaydinoquay: Story of My Life by Keewaydinoquay Peschel, Martin Hershock, editor of History of Michigan Law, Karl Bohnak, author of So Cold a Sky: Upper Peninsula Weather Stories.

Kerrytown Bookfest (www.kerrytownbookfest.org/):

The 5th annual Kerrytown BookFest was Sunday, September 9th. The Library of Michigan and the Center for the Book had a booth together at the BookFest. Metta Lansdale, a Board member from Royal Oak Public Library, assisted at the booth. We provided materials on Michigan authors and illustrators as well as the Library of Michigan’s rare collections.

National Book Festival (http://www.loc.gov/bookfest/):

We attended the 6th Annual National Book Festival on September 29th in Washington, DC to promote Michigan's literary heritage. Rebecca Havenstein-Coughlin and Metta Lansdale, Board members from Canton Public Library and Royal Oak Public Library, assisted at the event. We brought our resource materials on Michigan literature, including the new Reading the Upper Peninsula brochure and sample Big Chickens materials from Michigan Reads! We also provided materials on Michigan from Travel Michigan and the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Conferences:

We participated in the Library of Michigan vendor exhibit at the Michigan Library Association conference.

Workshops:

We sponsored and organized a Michigan Library Association Annual Conference Session – “Research and Publishing in the Library World”. We presented a panel of five speakers on academic publishing from a range of viewpoints. We had over 60 attendees and our presentation was singled out by members of the Academic & Research Libraries Division of the Michigan Library Association as one of the conference highlights. The program speakers were:

a. Joe Mika, WSU Dean of the Library and Information Science - how to do research;

b. Anita Ezzo, MSU Science Collections Coordinator and co-editor of the Journal of Agricultural & Food Information - the editorial perspective;

c. Steven Sowards, MSU Assistant Director for Collections - the peer reviewer perspective;

d. Corey Seeman, Associate Director of the UM Kresge Business Administration Library - the perspective of the scholarly researcher;

e. Sonya Norris, Web Site Administrator at the Library of Michigan - the perspective of the action researcher.

Resources:

One Book Archive:

We maintain the One Book Archive, where we post One Book event materials in electronic form from Michigan libraries. We currently have materials for 18 different books along with links to programming information.

Summer Reading Bookmarks:

Our 4th adult Summer Reading bookmarks, for the 2008 Summer Reading program, were mailed out to all public libraries in October with the Summer Reading manuals. The slogan is “Pollinate Your Mind” and the bookmarks have lists for Garden Fiction, Garden Science, Garden Mysteries, and Real Gardens. The bookmarks are included on the national Collaborative Summer Library Program’s website as a resource and are available for download at www.michigan.gov/documents/hal/lm_SummerReadingBookmark2008_206727_7.pdf

Reading the Upper Peninsula brochure:

With the help of librarians from various Upper Peninsula libraries, we produced a new literary brochure, Reading the Upper Peninsula, which lists fiction and non-fiction titles that highlight the Straits area and the Upper Peninsula. Copies are available for libraries on request and it is available online at the Center website at

Michigan Authors & Illustrators database:

We are maintaining the Michigan Authors & Illustrators database, did training for a new editing team, and participated in an upgrade of the programming code with the Michigan Association of Media in Education.

Sponsorships:

Michigan Author Award:

We sponsored the Michigan Library Association Michigan Author Award at $500. The award is presented at the Michigan Library Association conference. The 2007 recipient is children’s author Sarah Stewart.

Michigan Notable Books:

We provided $2,000 in funding to the Library of Michigan Foundation for the Michigan Notable Book author program and tour. Several affiliates had author visits as part of the program. As part of our sponsorship, the Center for the Book had a seat on the Notable Books selection committee, currently held by Chris Byron.

Administration:

Membership increased by four, up to 25 affiliates.

Marti Custer, as Board Chair, attended the National Center for the Book management conference, the Idea Exchange, on May 1-2 in Washington, DC.

The committee structure was stable with four standing committees: Statewide Projects, Statewide Resources, Nominations, and Finance.
