Placement / F2 Oncology
The department / Oncology, there are 36 Consultants (clinical and academic), treating all cancer types in a tertiary referral centre but also providing services to outlying hospitals in TVCN as visiting consultants with clinics.
21 consultants perform on call and ward duties. Treatments provided include chemotherapy and radiotherapy and managing patients in clinical trials.
The type of work to expect and learning opportunities / Ward based posts providing daily medical care to patients, admitting acute emergencies in the Oncology triage area, supported by specialist nurses and Registrars and clerk routine admissions for blood transfusions, ascitic drains and liver biopsies.
On call work evenings and weekends.
Attendance at clinics to observe only.
Interlinked with palliative care, so will learn symptom control but also side-effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Complications of cancer, breaking bad news, basic principles of cancer treatments and should see patients with common cancers.

Clinical Supervisor(s) for the placement / Dr Kinnari Patel
Main duties of the placement / Daily handover and then Consultant/Registrar ward rounds, admitting patients, making a diagnosis and planning and requesting investigations. Maintaining medical record, VTE forms, EIDDs.
On call evenings and weekends, and night shifts.
Mandatory specialist Oncology teaching Friday morning, and attendance at FY2 sessions at JR, videolink into grand rounds at JR where possible. Encouraged to attend departmental teaching Monday morning and also to present cases at this meeting. Encouraged to do audit.

The Churchill Hospital is a centre of excellence for cancer services and other specialties, including renal services and transplant, clinical and medical oncology, dermatology, haemophilia, infectious diseases, chest medicine, medical genetics and palliative care. No A&E on site
