OPENING DAY SET FOR LOCAL HISTORY MUSEUM

South County Museum opens for another season of activities on Saturday, May 7, 2016. Four new exhibits in the Metz exhibit Hall will be available for viewing.

“Bill Smith, Master Blacksmith” is a retrospective of the work by Wakefield’s Bill Smith who established the blacksmithing programs at SCM. Featured are Smith’s work in iron, tin, and copper as well as his drawings and notes on the construction of the forge and blacksmith shop built at the museum in 1995.

The Victorian kitchen has recently been renovated and is now a “Please Touch” exhibit. Visitors can enjoy a hands-on experience with kitchen implements and materials used in 19th century food preparation.

The Schmid Maritime Gallery features photographs of the wreck of the barge Katherine Howard on Green Hill Beach in December of 1940 and the ensuing efforts to retrieve the cargo.

A delightful exhibit of dolls highlights the “Vogue Dolls 1948-1972”. Created by Mrs. Jennie Graves, The display features the Ginny, Jeff, and Jan family of dolls created by Mrs. Jennie Graves. The collection has been donated to the Museum by Wendy Woodmansee of Narragansett.

Other buildings on the Museum’s campus, including the letterpress print shop, blacksmith shop and carpenter shop, will be staffed for opening day. Visitors are also encouraged to visit the Rhode Island Red Heritage flock of chickens and the other animals on the Museum’s Living History Farm.

South County Museum is located at 115 Strathmore Street on Canonchet Farm in Narragansett, RI. Exhibits are open on Friday and Saturday from 10 to 4 during May and June.
