This role is a member of the Halifax County Local Executive. Expenses are covered (travel, pet/child/eldercare)
and there is a smallhonourarium for the volunteer.

Paraphrased from our Operational Procedures (posted on our site for more information), the duties are as follows:

Duties as related to the Local Executive

  • Conduct and oversee the business of the Local
  • regularly attend meetings related to their role and perform duties as required.
  • present written reports to the Executive & the Local regarding their activities.
  • maintain a written record of their work and shall forward it to their successors.
  • at the AGM, present an annual report based on their committee duties and goals.
  • is a member of the Local Table Officers

Duties as related to Treasurer

  • chair the Finance Committee;
  • administer all financial mattersassociated with the Local, keep electronic files, keep itemized records;
  • report to the Local, by means of current monthly financial statement, at all Executive and Local Council and/or General Meetings;
  • provide financial records to the NSTU Financial Officer for an annual audit review of Local finances in accordance with guidelines prepared by the Finance and Property Committee by October;
  • prepare a proposed budget for approval at the Annual General Meeting in consultation with the Finance Committee and the Local Executive;
  • mentor the incoming Treasurer and be available until the annual audit is received and reviewed;
  • oversee the Halifax County Local Bursary with assistance from the Finance Committee.

Duties as related to Finance Committee

  • regularly attend committee meetings and perform duties as required;
  • revising Guidelines for NSTU Local Expenditures;
  • invest and carry out appropriate action with regard to the investment of non-current assets;
  • generally supervise the financial affairs of the Local in a manner consistent with the prudent financial practices and in particular with respect to policies made by the Local and the NSTU;
  • prepare criteria and select successful applicants for scholarships and/or bursaries sponsored by the Local;
  • review Expense Guidelines and the Financial Guidelines for Budgeting and Record Keeping found in the Appendix of this document and forward suggestions to the Local Executive for review.

Meetings / Time Commitment

  • At least 6 Local Executive Meetings, usually 4:30 – 8:00 pm. Supper is provided
  • At least 8 Local Council / General Meetings, usually 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm on a Wednesday
  • Local Committee meetings as determined by the Chair & the committee
  • Regional Committee meetings a few times per year
  • Attend Annual Council, a weekend in Apr or May (Friday – Sunday), and Pre-Council meeting, usually evening in April
  • Attend Executive Summer Leadership Planning, traditionally 3 days in the summer time – August 10 – 12, 2015
  • May attend NSTU Leadership Development Institute, traditionally 3 days in the summer – August 18 – 20, 2015
  • May be member of Halifax County Local Table Officers
  • May be member of Halifax Regional Representative Meetings at least 6 per year, usually first Monday of the month 4:30
