WH&S legislation - Plant Code of Practice 2005 outlines that workers (staff members) and others (students, maintenance contractors)

using plant / equipment should be trained and provided with information and instruction on :

o  safe work practices and operating procedures

o  maintenance procedures

The below checks are recommended for equipment prior to or during a unit of work where the equipment will undergo moderate to heavy use.

Visual check of mains Electrical Switches, Wiring and/or Conduit (Cracks, broken controls etc.) Arrange for immediate repair of any faults
Ensure workspaces and walk-ways to ensure areas are clear and unobstructed and that no slip-hazards are present
Check that the Welding area is free from Flammable Materials
Confirm availability and condition of Personal Protective Equipment (helmets, gloves, leather aprons, etc)
Check condition of welding screens at work bay are serviceable
Ensure fume extraction unit is operating
Conduct close inspection for damage to Switch Gear Test operation of Switch Gear (Proper function of switch controls)
Check that Connection/s for the Work Cable are tight and contact areas are clean
Check that the work clamp is securely attached to the welding table (A Screw Clamp is preferred to a spring loaded clip)
Check hose connections and unions for gas leaks Conduct a visual check for damage to hoses e.g. cracked, abraded or perished
Check Tungsten Electrode (Regrind/Sharpen if necessary)
Check condition of Gas Lens Nozzle (Check for cracks and chips)
Check that gas bottle is securely chained to the cylinder stand
Check availability of specific tools for this machine. (Wire brush, side cutters, tongs, pliers etc.)
