Job Title:Deputy Stage Manager

Department:Production

Responsible To:Company Manager

Stage Manager (Line Manager)

Responsible For: Assistant Stage Manager

Main Purpose:To work with the stage management team and in conjunction with the production department, provide practical and organisational support to the director, actors, designers, stage crew and technicians throughout the production.

Key responsibilities:

  • Marking up for rehearsals with the Stage Management Team.
  • Assisting the other team members to collate rehearsal props and rehearsal furniture.
  • Compiling pre rehearsal paperwork – cast plot, cast breakdown by scene etc.
  • Preparing and keeping the prompt script (or ‘Book’) up to date.
  • To be in rehearsals providing support to the cast and creative team. Being the first point of contact in the room.
  • Completing rehearsal notes daily.
  • Liaising with the Director to compile a daily rehearsal call.
  • Making sure that all relevant people are aware of rehearsal times, meetings, costume fittings and coaching sessions (where applicable).
  • Compose and distribute plots in a timely fashion for the Technical rehearsal.
  • In the latter stages of rehearsal, providing the most up to date electronic script for Signers, Audio Describers and Captioner.
  • Calling cues and actor’s entrances during the performances.
  • Completing the show report immediately after each performance and ensuring it is circulated to the relevant people, liaising with box office and customer service staff where necessary. Ensuring that any appropriate action points are taken up before the next performance.
  • Liaising with the Creative Team to resolve any problems which may arise during rehearsals or a performance run to ensure the agreed and established artistic technical standards for productions are maintained at all times.
  • Ensuring all work complies with health and safety legislation and in-house policies.
  • Running the technical aspects of the show in the Studio, operating sound and lighting where applicable.
  • Being prepared to assist on other shows, during quieter period and once your own show has opened.
  • Review and update the DSM guide.
  • Participate with any additional events associated with either shows (talks, education events, gala evenings, press requests etc) or with Learning Department projects such as NT Connections or Summer School as required.
  • Help familiarise freelance stage management with Sheffield Theatres’ policies and the Sheffield environs.

General

  • As a term of your employment you may also be asked to undertake other such appropriate duties as and when required of you, as well as being asked to work flexible hours to suit the operation of the organisation.
  • Participate in all training and development initiatives as required.
  • Comply with the organisation’s policies and legal obligation regarding health and safety, environmental health and employment practices.

PERSON SPECIFICATION/ COMPETENCIES

Essential

  • Experience of working on large scale, large cast productions.
  • Experience of cueing large musicals and good score reading ability.
  • Substantive previous experience of stage management work including demonstrative experience in the delivery of productions at the highest artistic and technical level.
  • Previous experience of working in a repertory theatre.
  • Knowledge of health and safety laws and evidence of working with them in practice.
  • An interest and empathy for the arts.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including a good standard of spoken and written English.
  • Good ICT skills, including working knowledge of Microsoft Office’s Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Excellent organisational skills with a high level of attention to detail and ability to manage a heavy work-load efficiently and effectively.
  • Ability to work effectively within a busy environment including periods of intense pressure to meet non-negotiable deadlines (First Night).
  • Enthusiasm and calmness – to lead by example.
  • A team-player who is personable, diplomatic and has the ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels both internally an externally.
  • Committed, self motivated with good team leadership and staff management skills.

Desirable

  • Recent first aid certificate
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Previous experience of musical theatre/ opera.

MAIN TERMS AND CONDITIONS

The contract will be subject to the Equity/UK Theatre Agreement for Subsidised Repertory Theatre in the UK.
