Addressed to:
40 teachers of English as a Foreign Language or teaching in English in Pre-Primary and first and second cycles of Primary Education.
Justification
Nobody will discuss the fact that a foreign language teacher needs to teach sounds. Teaching phonics is the key to learn to read and write. The two main theories of teaching phonics need to be known and analyzed.
Aims
· To get to know the different theories of learning to read.
· To understand the different approaches and activities related.
· To learn the stages in the reading process and some suggested activities to improve their teaching skills.
· To provide teachers with a range of ideas to develop phonics awareness in the classroom.
· To provide the teachers with resources to look for materiales and create their own materials.
Contents
· What are phonics. Their goal.
· Two theories of teaching reading skills: phonics and whole language learning.
· Approaches: synthetic phonics and analytic phonics.
· Sounds in the spoken world and practical ideas.
· Sounds in the written world and practical ideas.
Methodology
The first six sessions will combine some basic theory and practice. The methodology will be practical.
In the last session teachers will share their experiences and views after doing a practice in their classes.
Teacher
CARMEN LASTRA is a pre-primary school teacher at Catalina de Foix bilingual school in Zizur. Her current teaching involves teaching in English to 3 year-olds. She is very keen on phonics and she is determined to teach the sounds in the spoken and written world to the youngest kids as a basic stage for the reading process. She has trained teachers on how to work with phonics in Pre-Primary and Primary stages.
Duration
30 hours (20 classroom hours and 10 personal working hours).
Days, hours and place
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 17:30 to 19:30.
October: 4th, 6th , 11th, 13th, 18th, 20th and 25th
October: 27th (17:30-20:30)
November: 17th (17:30-20:30)
The course will take place at José Vila School (c/ Tajonar 14. Pamplona-Iruñea).

If many teachers are keen on taking part in the course the following criteria will be applied:
1- Belonging to the group of teachers the activity is addressed to.
2- Order of registration.

· If for whatever reason a teacher that has beed accepted into this course cannot finally take part in it, he or she must let the organisation know at least two days before the activity starts. Teachers that do not do so may not be admitted in future activities.
