CENTRALWASHINGTONUNIVERSITY
Community Counseling and Psychological AssessmentCenter

Your future is Central.

The CCPAC: Description, Mission, and Research Guidelines

Description: The Community Counseling and PsychologicalAssessmentCenter is a training clinic for Graduate students in Mental Health Counseling, School Counseling, and School Psychology. Weprovide free, confidential counseling and psychoeducational assessments for children, as well as counseling for adults, couples and families. Graduate-student trainees, who are supervised by clinic faculty, provide all services.

Mission: The CCPAC has three primary goals: 1) train graduate students in Mental Health Counseling, School Counseling, and School Psychology; 2) provide counseling and psychoeducational assessment services to children, and introductory counseling services for adults, couples and families in the community as well as to CWU students; and 3) expand the body of knowledge in counseling and psychology through research. As a training facility, these elements are listed in order of priority with our major focus being on the training of graduate students.

Guidelines for Research: Clinic research will be permitted under the following conditions:

  • Preliminary Approval:
  • Unanimous consent of clinic faculty. If any faculty member working in the clinic is not comfortable with a research proposal, the research study will not be permitted as faculty may not perform at their highest level as a result.
  • Approval of the program committees. The Mental Health and School Counseling Program committee and the School Psychology Program committee must also approve a potential study. This restriction helps to ensure effective operation of the clinic, avoid potential conflicts with existing polices, and oversee the timing of proposed projects.
  • Consent of students enrolled in practica. As with faculty, if a student is uncomfortable with a study, it will not be permitted. Their training and care of clients are our top priorities. (Student approval is not necessary for using archival data).
  • Secondary Approval:
  • Department Head approval: Once the clinic faculty, students, and program committees have approved the research proposal, the request will go to the department head.
  • HSRC approval: Research proposals approved at the preliminary approval level must be reviewed and accepted by Central’s Human Subject Review Committee (HSRC). Any changes to a study suggested in the HSRC review process (or after HSRC acceptance) must also be approved by the faculty, students, and program committees (as described above).

CCPAC Guide to the Test Room

The test room, located behind the front desk in the clinic, is the central location for all of the Psychology Department’s tests, questionnaires, and inventories. It also holds a small library of various types of psychology reference books. The test room is accessed primarily by school psychology students, some faculty, and counseling students.

In order to use tests from the Test Room, you will need to: (1) reserve them, (2) check them out on the date you requested, and (3) return them on the stated date. To be sure that we can get tests out to all the students who may need them, it is important to sign up for your tests as early as possible. Depending upon the test and your class schedules, some students may have to share tests once they are checked out due to the larger number of students than tests. If for some reason you are unable to return your test(s) on the stated date, please contact me so that we can be sure it is not already reserved for someone else.

To reserve a test, fill out your information on the sign up sheet on the Test Room door. Be sure to write when you will pick it up and when you will return it. On the date that you pick up your test(s), office staff can let you into the Test Room to pick them up. Your tests will have your name on them and be laid out on the floor against the wall closest to the entrance. When you return the test(s), if a teaching assistant is not in the Test Room, other office staff can open the room for you so that you can place your tests against the far wall.

To use questionnaires or inventories, you do not need to reserve them. You may do so if you are reserving other tests, otherwise, you are able to take your needed questionnaire directly from the appropriate spot in the filing cabinet. Please note that if you are the last person to take a questionnaire and there are no others left, please leave a note for me so that I can order more.

The Test Room usually only has one copy of manuals for the questionnaires and inventories. These manuals, which are filed in the filing cabinet with test protocols, must notleave the clinic. You may sign up for them for same-day in-clinic use by filling out the form on the cabinet door located to the right of the desk. Please return them to the test room when you are finished with them.

To use any of the psychology reference books, please fill out your name and the date you plan to return the book on the card inside the book’s cover. Please leave the card on the desk for the assigned teaching assistant. If the book is missing a card, leave the appropriate information on a note. When returning the book, place it back onto the location on the shelf it was taken from.

Thank you for your cooperation and have a good school year!
