Tex / Great Women Writers: Rita Dove, S. E. Hinton, and Maya Angelou.
In this inspiring program, three powerful female writers reveal the roots of their passion for writing. Rita Dove—America’s youngest Poet Laureate, a cellist, and a voracious reader—finds in poetry a gateway to self-expression, fueled by the melodic quality of words and a love of language awakened by her 11th-grade English teacher. In responding to questions from high school students, S. E. Hinton—author of The Outsiders at age 16—declares that it was her love of reading that made her a writer. Maya Angelou—a poet, a writer of memoirs, and the holder of more than fifty honorary degrees—is fascinated by the impact and rhythm of words, and experiences a feeling of liberation in being able to express with precision exactly how she feels. (24 minutes)

Tex is constantly getting into trouble, but he resents Mace acting like a parent. Friends like Johnny and his gorgeous sister Jamie help Tex forget his problems. But when it all comes to a head one day, the explosion that follows may cost Tex his life.

Lord of the Flies / William Golding : Lord of the Flies.
Stranded on an island by a plane crash that leaves all the adults dead, a group of schoolboys establish a primitive society to survive. However, their tribal community, begun on moral terms, decays into savagery and ends in a brutal murder. This allegorical novel, now a classic of 20th-century literature, probes the dark side of human nature that lurks beneath the thin veneer of civilization. In this program--enriched by footage from the 1063 black and white film directed by Peter Brook-- literary experts discuss the novel's religious imagery and use of addition, the principles of law and order, role of society and culture. VHS. Films for the Humanities & Sciences, 1999. 1 videocassette (32 min.)

Lord of the Flies
This is an adventure tale about a group of British schoolboys marooned on a tropical island. Alone in a world of uncharted possibilities, devoid of adult supervision or rules, the boys begin to forge their own society, their own rules, their own rituals. With this seemingly romantic premise, through the seemingly innocent acts of children, Golding exposes the duality of human nature itself--the dark, eternal divide between order and chaos, intellect and instinct, structure and savagery.
Lord of the Flies
Sir William Golding reads his novel about a group of British school boys, stranded on a tropical island after a plane crash, who attempt to form a civilized society that descends into brutal anarchy. Digital Audio
Lord of the Flies
Lord of the Flies is famed theater director Peter Brook's daring translation of William Golding's brilliant novel. The story of 30 English schoolboys stranded on an uncharted island at the start of the "next" war, Lord of the Flies is a seminal film of the New American Cinema and a fascinating anti-Hollywood experiment in location filmmaking. As the cast relived Golding's frightening fable, Brook found the cinematic "evidence" of the author's terrifying thesis there is a beast in us all.
