COURSE DESCRIPITON

This course will emphasize the development of invasion tactics through a variety of activities. Students will learn fundamental skills, team strategies, rules of the games, refereeing, and active participation of game play. Students will also learn how activities can lead to an active healthy lifestyles by developing a personal fitness plan.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • Understand advanced skills of invasion games.
  • Apply principles ofinvasion games.
  • Develop intermediate skillsof disc golf.
  • Know and understandsafety and skills involved indisc golf.
  • Evaluate health relatedcomponents of discgolf/ultimate frisbee anddesign a fitness plan tocompensate forweaknesses.
  • Develop knowledge andskills of ultimate frisbee.
  • Apply knowledge and skills of basketball.
  • Apply strategies of thegame and how to officiate.
  • Evaluate health-relatedcomponents of basketballand design a personalfitness plan that addressesweakness in activity.

GOALS

The physical education department will provide the students with the opportunities to:

  1. Develop an understanding of the effects of exercise on the human body through basic knowledge of current health related physical fitness.
  2. Develop an understanding of motor skills and movement principles to meet the rigors of daily living, working and lifetime leisure activities.
  3. Develop positive social and emotional skills, attitudes, and behaviors to include consideration, competition, and the acceptance of rules and authority.
  4. Enhance one’s self-concepts through a sense of achievement and increase awareness of their strengths and weaknesses, abilities and limitations.

EXPECTATIONS

Have appropriate activity clothing (elastic waist shorts, sweat pants or wind pants, T-shirt and or sweat shirt, athletic socks, tennis shoes, and one piece swim suit / swim trunks). To receive credit, one needs to change into activity clothes to participate.

Bring a combination lock to place on a small locker in the Phy. Ed. locker room (students ID # will be engraved on bottom of lock for identification).

Must purchase heart rate monitor strap at $8.00 (Will be used for all physical education classes throughout your high school experience).

Pocket folder for pencil, class work and study materials.

Report to designated area within 5 minutes of last bell for attendance and remain in the physical education hallway until the end of class bell.

Abide by prescribed safety procedures; and respect equipment and facilities. (included in participation grade)

Daily class participation:

One class make up is required for every two excused absences (school related field trips during class time, illness, medical excuse, etc). A make up consists of a student attending one physical education class during a study hall or lunch period. A make-up must be completed within one week from the second excused absence. A suspension can be made up by attending one physical education class during a study hall or lunch period. There are no make-ups for unexcused absences and non-dress/participation.

Be respectful and courteous to classmates and teachers. (included in participation grade)

Display a cooperative behavior, positive attitude, good sportsmanship and appropriate language. (included in participation grade)

Injury or illnesses lasting longer than three days (parent note for up to three days) needs a medical excuse from a physician. Classroom attendance is still required. Class make-up is required.

GRADING

Required Assessments: Web based personal profile, personal wellness plan, written and physical tests.

  • 70 % - Daily class points attendance/participation (see below information)
  • 20 % - Written (web based profile, personal wellness plan, classroom assignments, take home worksheets, quizzes, and tests).
  • 10 % - Skills evaluation

DAILY CLASS POINTS - 20 POINT SYSTEM:

  • 5 Points – Being prepared and on time, sitting in attendance lines and actively doing warm-ups
  • 5 Points – Proper Clothing (see above info)
  • 10 Points – Active class participation: Effort, Cooperation and Behavior

THINGS TO REMEMBER:

  • Electronic devices (cell phones, iPods, cameras, etc) are not permitted.
  • Gum is not allowed in any physical education room (gym, weight/cardio room, etc).
  • No students are allowed in the equipment room without permission.
  • Please knock before entering the P.E. planning area.
  • No students will be allowed to use the gym or weight room unless supervised.
  • Pick one small locker to hold your activity clothes for class that is located near a half locker to store your belongings in during class. (Do not store your Phy. Ed. clothes in a half locker remove after class and return to small locker.)
  • If you are tardy 3 times, you may make them up by doing one make up period.
  • There are opportunities for extra credit – just ask (I will grant extra credit opportunities to those individuals who are putting forth effort in class).
