Date of submission to the OIE / January 22th 2013
ToR:To use, promote and disseminate diagnostic methods validated according to OIE Standards
To investigate and analyze the status and characteristics of animal rabies, surveillance measures including:
(i) Surveillance on apparently healthy animals, (ii)Laboratory confirmation of suspected animals, (iii) Wildlife (mainly bats) rabies surveillance, (iv) Investigation on immunization coverage of the domestic dogs in rural areas.
Test recommended by the OIE / Total number of test performed last yearIndirect diagnostic tests / Nationally / Internationally
Fluorescent antibody virus neutralisation (FAVN)* / 257 / 2
Immunochromatographic test strip (ICTS) / 500
Direct diagnostic tests / Nationally / Internationally
Fluorescent antibody test (FAT) / 14 (suspected dogs) / 10** (suspected animals, including dog, goat, buffalo and alpaca)
Cell culture inoculation test (RTCIT) / Above 14 (suspected dogs) / Above 10 suspected animals
Reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) *** / 442 (apparently healthy dog samplesfor pathogen surveillance, including 300 brain tissues and 142 saliva swabs)
2225 bat brain tissues (wildlife surveillance) / --
Real time TaqManRT-PCR(FQ-PCR)*** / 442 (apparently healthy dog samplesfor pathogen surveillance, including 300 brain tissues and 142 saliva swabs)

*FAVN was carried out to assess vaccinationefficacy ofrural and companiondogs.
**10 suspected animal samples were from Nepal.
*** RT-PCR and FQ-PCR isused to screen large number of the samples collected from apparently healthy dogs. PCR positive brain tissues are further confirmed by FAT. All the brain samples of apparently healthy dogs were collected from the restaurants selling dog meat. Saliva samples were collected from apparently healthy rural dog in rabies endemic areas.
