The Gloucester Rotary Club “Unsung Hero” award has been initiated to recognize the outstanding efforts and contributions of volunteers and dedicated employees of ‘not-for-profit organizations within the bounds of the Gloucester Shire

The Rotary motto of ‘SERVICE above SELF’ is the basis of all Rotary undertakings, and is best demonstrated through our Community Service. Volunteers are the life blood of our community but are often not well recognized for their valuable and selfless commitment.

The Unsung Hero Award offers an opportunity for our Club and our community to recognize and celebrate the efforts of those dedicated individuals who have over many years contributed to the quality of life in our community without reward or recognition.

We the members of the Rotary Club of Gloucester believe that through the Unsung Hero Award, we will promote the importance of volunteers to the well being and vitality of our community. The successful Awardee receives an inscribed trophy as well as $500 to be donated to a charity or ‘not-for-profit’ organization of their choice.

In our search for suitable candidates for the Unsung Hero award, the Rotary Club of Gloucester contacted numerous service and not-for-profit organizations and community groups seeking suitable nominations that met specific selection criteria.

These include;

  1. Person who has made a significant contribution over a period of years to the Gloucester community or a community service or not-for-profit organisation based within the bounds of the Gloucester Shire.
  1. Person who has NOT received a community service award or similar public recognition in recent years for their contribution.
  1. Person who lives within the bounds of the Gloucester Shire.
  1. Person is not a current member of the Rotary Club of Gloucester.

There are no specific categories for the Award, thus allowing nominations to be taken from a range of fields including volunteers from aged care facilities, health services,, sporting clubs and charitable organizations etc

We received five nominations and a Selection Panel made up of Gloucester Rotarians had quite some difficulty in making a decision to who should be the recipient of the award.

Before I make that announcement I would like to congratulate all the nominees and ask them to come forward, as I call them, so we can show them our appreciation for their contribution to our community, and present them with a certificate.

Nominees are:

John & Barbara Ikin – swimming, netball, croquet clubs, Hydrotherapy Pool &Westpac helicopter fundraising

Marie Bartlett – Stratford Hall (39 yrs), coordinator of Loss & Grief group

Kerry Chisholm – writes & distrutes the ‘Messenger’ for the Uniting Church, helped with the Rotary booklet last year

Helen Rooke – Palliative care nurse

Faye deWitte – plays organ in Uniting Church

The winner of the award this year is John & Barbara Ikin.

As part of the Award the recipient was asked to nominate a charity or not-for-profit organisation they would like the $500 donation to go to. John & Barbara asked that the donation be made out to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

I would like to thank all those who took the trouble to submit a nomination and those of the assessment team who had the arduous task of selecting our recipient from a group of people who are all deserving of the recognition of an Unsung Hero.

The Club has agreed that this award become a perpetual event to help us recognize and celebrate the fine contribution made by our volunteers in the Gloucester community.

Four Way Test

Of all the things we say and do:

Is it the truth?

Is it fair to all concerned?

Will it build goodwill and friendship?

Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
