Contract Status:This apprenticeship is available from September 2016 and will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of four years.
Hours of Work: 36¼ hours per week, 5 days per week, 8.30am-4.50pm Mon-Thurs, 8.30am-4.25pm Fri.

Reporting to:Senior Technical Manager
Purpose of the New Role:To train as a Mechanical Engineering Apprentice Technician within the Faculty of Engineering, providing technical support to researchers, students and academic staff within the University. Based within The Precision Manufacturing Centre, the role will gain a broad understanding of the various engineering subjects and processes available including both manual and CNC turning and milling, fitting, grinding, Computer Aided Design and upto 5 Axis CNC programming. Training will progress across all skill areas, while working at all times under the supervision of engineering technicians. The role will attend suitable day release courses at a local training establishment.
Main Responsibilities / % time per year1. / Observing, learning and understanding a wide range of engineering processes and skill, while under the instruction of skilled engineering technicians. / 35%
2. / Demonstrating learned skills and processes as the training period progresses. / 30%
3. / Undertake and complete suitable college courses throughout the training period with a view to completing a suitable level 4 (HNC) qualification. / 15%
4. / Learn, understand and demonstrate the importance of the University’s Health & Safety policy / 5%
5. / Creating and maintaining a training log book over the duration of the apprenticeship period to record skills learned and projects worked on. / 5%
6. / Maintenance and general housekeeping of workshop and laboratory areas. / 5%
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience
Essential / DesirableQualifications/ Education / 5 GCSE’s including English, Maths, and a Science, grades A to C / Five GCSEs (or equivalent) at Grades A – B, to include Mathematics, English andPhysics
Skills/Training / Good level of practical ability / General computer skills.
Experience / Practical school level Technology work within a workshop environment. / Basic understanding of engineering drawings.
Statutory/Legal / Must satisfy the requirements for the Governments advanced apprentice scheme:

Decide on different methods of production as training progresses.
General engineering advice to research staff and students.

Alterations and modifications to designs and materials to improve functionality, reliability and safety.Ordering of tools, parts, etc. within a limited budget.
iii)referred to the appropriate line manager by the role holder
Major safety issues.Requesting annual leave.
Reporting sickness.
