Waste management strategies and technologies are undergoing rapid development, and in particular, the role of landfilling is evolving. Nonetheless, landfilling is still, worldwide, the predominant waste disposaloption, and landfills are still characterised by many issuesrelated to technology and emissions, including leachate and biogas. The Central Branch Landfill Interest Group (LIG) announces the seventh bi-ennial seminar dedicated to capacity building and technology transfer in the science and practice of waste disposal by landfill. Landfill 2007 is designed to create a low-cost local forum where a high standard of technology transfer may be experienced – with the focus firmly on landfill issues rather than on waste management in general.
Call for Papers
Papers and posters are invited for presentation at the Seminar on the theme:-
"Evolution of Landfill Engineering"
Focus on the rapid evolution of the following aspects of sanitary landfilling
legislation
landfill design
leachate management
landfill gas management
landfill operations
community participation & environmental issues
landfill closure
alternative waste treatment / disposal technologies,or related topics.
Detailed abstracts of the proposed contributions, of not more than one A4 page typed in single spacing must reach the secretariat as soon as possible.
Successful contributors will be informed by 30 April 2007.The abstract must clearly describe the content of the presentation and its basis (detailed case study, discussion of practical experience, preliminary research data, completed unpublished research, literature review, administrative initiatives and regulations, etc.). Each leading author may submit no more than two abstracts; and the sender will be the contact person with the Landfill 2007 secretariat. The official language of the seminar will be English, and all papers must be written and presented in English. At least one of the authors will be expected to attend the seminar and present the accepted paper in person. Papers not exceeding twelve pages must be submitted by
31 July 2007 in accordance with the prescribed format which, will be supplied with the notice of acceptance? A brief CV must be attached to the abstract when it is submitted for consideration.

This seminar will attract key decision makers from all over South Africa. It provides an excellent opportunity to display products and services related to all aspects of landfilling in terms of design, construction, materials, services, equipment and management. There will be a technical tour on 14 September to the Mogale Landfill Siteand the Maropeng Cradle of Humankind.
