Grains Group-Part 2
Performance Outcomes:
1. Names the parts of MyPyramid for kids.
2. Recognizes the amount recommended daily for their age in the Grains Group.
3. Recognizes examples of an amount that counts as 1 ounce equivalent from the Grains
Group.
Instructor Activities:
1. Reinforce MyPyramid for kids by referring to the Body Composition poster and naming the
parts (USDA, 2005).
Instructor:
Name the parts of MyPyramid for kids to the person next to you.
Physical Activity, Grains Group, Vegetables Group, Fruits Group, Milk Group, Meat & Beans Group, and Oils are the parts.
2. Discuss the amount recommended daily for their age in the Grains Group (USDA, 2005).
Instructor:
a. The amount of grains you need depends on your age, whether you’re a boy or girl,
and your level of physical activity.
b. The amount recommended daily for your age in the Grains Group is:
• Children 4-8 years old, 4-5 oz. (make half your grains whole)
• Girls 9-13 years old, 5 oz. (make half your grains whole)
• Boys 9-13 years old, 6 oz. (make half your grains whole)
3. Provide examples of an amount that counts as 1 ounce equivalent from the Grains Group
(USDA, 2005).
Instructor:
a. In general, 1 slice of bread, 1 cup of ready-to-eat cereal, or 1⁄2 cup of cooked
rice, or cooked pasta can be considered as 1 ounce from the Grains Group.
b. Some common portions and ounce equivalents include: 1 large bagel=4 oz.,
1 large muffin=3 oz., 1 c. cooked pasta=2 oz., and 1 large tortilla=4 oz.
c. Start smart with breakfast and look for whole grain cereals.
Additional Performance Outcomes:
1. Demonstrates sufficient fitness to be able to perform Fitness Pals illustrated on the posters.
2. Evaluates personal consumption from the Grains Group.
3. Creates a cheer about the Grains Group.
Curriculum Infusion
1. Classroom, physical education, health, science, music. Play one of the songs from “Move n’ with
Fitness Pals” CD. Ask children to move with the Fitness Pals.
2. Classroom, physical education, health, science, math. Bring a box of ready-to-eat cereal, cooked
spaghetti, measuring cups, bowls, and dinner plates. Divide children into squads. Ask children
to pour a portion of cereal that they would normally eat into a bowl. After pouring the cereal, ask
children to measure 1 cup of cereal and pour it into a different bowl. Allow time for children to
evaluate their consumption of cereal and how it relates to the Grains Group recommendations for
their age. Repeat using 1⁄2 cup cooked pasta and dinner plates.
Inclusion
Enrichment. Ask children to create a cheer about the Grains Group.
