LOCAL SHELTER CELEBRATE’S 10 YEARS OF FASHION, AWARENESS AND SUPPORT AT FUNDRAISERGlimmer of Hope Fashion Show – Dubuque Community YMCA/YWCA
[Dubuque, September 18] The Dubuque Community YMCA/YWCA’s 10th Annual Glimmer of Hope Fashion Show presented by Verizon will take place on Friday, October 2, 2015, at the Mystique Casino in the Cabaret Room. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. with appetizers and a cash bar. The fashion show and program will begin at 7:00 p.m.
“This event is made possible through a grant from the HopeLine® from Verizon program. The Dubuque Community YMCA/YWCA is proud to partner with a company that is committed to helping the 1 in 3 women, 1 in 4 men and more than 3 million children in the United States impacted by domestic violence.” stated Sharon Covey, President & CEO of the Dubuque Community YMCA/YWCA.
The emcees for the evening will be Lisa Bennett and Mike Callaghan of 92.9 KATFM. The fashion show will feature members of the Dubuque Police Department, members of the Sherriff’s Office, City staff, and staff of SASC (Substance Abuse Services Center) as the runway models. The Dubuque Community YMCA/YWCA would also like to recognize Dubuque Bank and Trust, the only sponsor who has supported this event every year it has been held.
This event will raise awareness of domestic violence in our community and support for victims of domestic violence served by the Dubuque Community YMCA/YWCA’s Victim Services Shelter.
Seating is limited and advance tickets may be purchased for $35 at either Dubuque Community YMCA/YWCA location (35 N Booth St. or 4170 Pennsylvania Ave.), Graham’s Style Store for Men & Women (890 Main St.) and Swag Fashion Accessories (3340 Center Grove Dr.).
The Dubuque Community YMCA/YWCA Victim Services Shelter is the only domestic violence shelter in the area-with the next closest a 2 hour drive away in Waverly. Services provided by the Dubuque Community YMCA/YWCA Victim Services Shelter include: safe shelter, crisis intervention, advocacy, empowerment, financial literacy, assistance with continuing education and/or job readiness, and community-based prevention education and training. All services are free and completely confidential.
Because of state-wide restructuring of domestic violence services in 2013, the Dubuque Community YMCA/YWCA no longer receives $190,000 in federal crime victim funding, making operating the Shelter a constant challenge. Funds raised through Glimmer of Hope are vital to keeping the Dubuque Community YMCA/YWCA Victim Services Shelter open and accessible to those that need it most.
This is the third year Verizon has sponsored the event. The HopeLine from Verizon program puts the nation’s most reliable wireless network to work in the community by collecting no-longer-used wireless phones, batteries and accessories in any condition from any wireless service provider and turning them into support for domestic violence victims. Devices can be donated at the Verizon store in Dubuque (3432 Dodge St.) or to either Dubuque Community YMCA/YWCA location (35 N Booth St. or 4170 Pennsylvania Ave.).
