Dear Parents, Caregivers, students, friends and supporters of the College
Kia ora koutou
The year is rapidly coming to a close for the senior boys and I spoke to them last week about the importance of these final weeks in regard to the success or otherwise of their entire academic year. For those boys doing mostly internal classes there will be a great many standards due over this period, for those with external exams putting aside time every night is the key to success – rather than practise until you get it right practise until you can’t get it wrong! The staff at Saint John’s are giving of their time and the senior boys need to be making the most of this. Year nine and tens also have important exams coming up on the 14th and 15th of November. It is vital that the boys are aware of what will be covered in the exams and what type of preparation they should be doing in the lead up so must pay close attention to the information they will get in the following weeks from their teachers.
As usual there are a number of successes celebrated within this October newsletter, from academic with some of our old boys graduating from university, to the arts with Zacharie Leet-Guinan being chosen to attend the Globe Theatre,through to sport our 1st XV coach and Physical Education teacher Logan Asplin being nominated as one of three top coaches in the Waikato. It is fantastic to see the College consistently achieving at the highest levels across a range of disciplines. Congratulations also to the heard working teacher in charge of cricket,
Mr Austin, who was awarded Life Membership of Hamilton Cricket for his efforts over many years.
I would like to draw your attention to the information in this newsletter about the ‘RCIA’ course that is offered to enable all members of the Saint John’s community to become full constituents of the Catholic Church. This is a golden opportunity to further embrace the special character of Saint John’s and all we have to offer.

We are fast approaching the final ceremonies for our current Year 13 Men.
Our Final Full School Mass and Senior Prizegiving honour our seniors and our Year 13’s in particular.
- All parents, friends and relatives are welcome to attend both our Mass and our Senior Prizegiving.
- Both are formal events and all of Year 13 need to attend in full No 1s – clean, well mended, especially the black leather shoes. Hair needs to be tidy.
THANKSGIVING MASS
- The Mass is a full school mass so all boys must attend, in correct school uniform, including Years 9 and 10 students. The boys are welcome to leave for home from the Mass at around 2:30pm. Buses will return the boys to school to enable them to catch their normal buses home.
SENIOR PRIZEGIVING
- All Year 13 must attend the prizegiving. All seniors are encouraged to attend.
Students must meet at the Clyde St side of the Cathedral by 6:45pm.
- Boys at all levels of the school are encouraged to wear No 1s where possible, otherwise, correct well mended, winter uniform should be worn.
- Black leather lace up shoes should be worn, well polished and gleaming.
- Do not find yourself embarrassed by not having your son in correct and well presented uniform.

THE LEGACY OF 2012
The Legacy of 2011 contributed just over $4000 to St John’s College. This year the interest it has earned has been given to the student council to purchase items that will improve the facilities for future students.
The leavers of 2012 are again being urged to add to the school legacy by creating the Legacy of 2012. The main contribution last year was the deposit that students had paid to hire their blazers. They transferred the deposit to the legacy. Of course this is not compulsory but we hope you will feel you can support the development of St John’s College in a small yet significant way. Some students made a separate donation.
Contributors to the Legacy automatically become members of the St John’s Old Boys with regular contact being kept with St John’s College.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Congratulations toSam Yu(pictured)one of our top Science students has just been accepted for the Rotary National Science Technology Forum at Auckland University in January of 2013. It is a tremendous achievement to be selected as only the very best academic students get that opportunity. The Hillcrest Rotary Club donated $600 towards the fee for the ten day event which was very gratefully received by Sam. He is very excited about attending, following in the footsteps of our current Head Boy Justin Jang who attended in January of this year. Well done Sam!
SCHOLARSHIP
Congratulations to Luke Fielding Year 13, for winning a $5000 David Johnstone Scholarship
for Waikato University.
New Zealand Youth Shakespeare Company
Congratulations to Zacharie Leet-Guinan! (centre of picture) He has been selected for the NZ Youth Shakespeare Company and as a result, will travel with 23 other young adults to London in July 2013. Here he will spend time at The Globe Theatre, learning more about Shakespeare and ultimately gaining the unique chance to perform on the stage itself. Zac attended a weeklong camp during the recent school holidays with 47 other students and after many workshops and two evening performances in Auckland, he was offered this well deserved position. Directed by Raymond Hawthorne, a well known NZ actor, Zac presented a polished rendition of Shylock in “Merchant of Venice”. Reviews of the performance commented that “Zacharie played Shylock’s hatred of Antonio and his boys with supreme confidence and clarity; making it understandable – you can taste it...”
This is a fantastic selection and opportunity for Zac and we are very proud of him. While there are many months of tough fundraising ahead to raise the $8000+ for the trip, the experience will definitely be worth it. Well done, Zac!

Congratulations toReece Gerritswho gained a gold medal at the WorldSkills NZ National Finals in July this year. He has now been chosen to represent New Zealand at the WorldSkills International competition in Germany in July 2013. He will be competing in the Sheet Metal Technology category. Reece is looking for sponsorship and if you are able to support him please contact the College.

The PPTA has requested that a Paid Union Meeting be held for staff to discuss progress on
the Collective Employment Contract negotiations.
This means that school will need to finish after Lesson 3 at 12.25.
Some Staff will remain on site to provide supervision for students who cannot get home.

SENIOR CAREERS ACADEMY 2013
Students who wish to become members of the Senior Careers Academy for 2013 need to make contact with their Dean or with Mr Berry. This is open to students at Years 12 and 13 in 2013.
Entry to this programme requires a meeting between the family and the school to finalise entry details.
St John’s College Junior Speech Competition
The Year 9 heats for the speech competition were held in the last week of Term 3. The contestants were the best speakers from each English class who competed over three lunch breaks. The competition points were very close and the judges were treated to an array of thought provoking speeches and outstanding delivery from the young competitors. Many thanks go to my co-judges, Jack White (Year 13), Shaun Letcher (Year 13) and Mr Dennis Hetet. It was a tough task due to the excellent qualities of all of the speakers. However, congratulations must go to the following students for their outstanding speeches and placing in the top three. They are;

The Rite of Christian of Adults (RCIA )
“All students, parents, caregivers and whanau interested in exploring becoming full members of the Catholic Church can contact the Religious Education faculty at Saint John’s College to enrol in the RCIA programmes through the Cathedral. The RCIA programmes are journeys modelled on the rites of the early Christian communities.
From the time of the Apostles, 2000 years ago, becoming a Christian was accomplished by a journey of initiation in stages. This involved a time of enquiry, a time of learning, a time of deepening one’s faith, Baptism, Confirmation and admission to Holy Communion.”
The proposed completion of the programme is on Easter Sunday, the 31st of March 2013.
The RCIA group meet every Wednesday starting on the 30th of October 2012 at 1930 in the Cathedral’s foyer. Feel free to contact the college.

CRICKET
After a month of pre season training the season officially started on Saturday 20th. St John’s has 7 teams in Term Four – a 1st XI, 2nd XI, two Colts teams, a Year 10 Premier and two Year 9 Premier.
The 1st XI defeated Hamilton Boys High 4th XI by 7 wickets, chasing a total of 171/4 they achieved the target in the 34th over with Jayden Purcell scoring 72 runs.
The Year 10 Colts team defeated Cambridge easily, dismissing them for 49, while the Year 9 team played, but were defeated, one of the two top Hamilton Boys High teams from Term One, but did bat through the 40 overs which was a credit to the team.
Also Mr Austin has been awarded a Life membership of the Hamilton Cricket Association, in recognition of 40 years of coaching managing and administering Junior cricket for Hamilton.
NEW ZEALAND CROSSWHITES
During the week of Thursday, 27th September to Thursday, 4th October, Marc Glenister, DarrianDempsey (Year 10’s) and Ben Wheatley (Year 9) represented New Zealand Under 16’s at the Christian Football Federation Australia National Tournament. This years’ tournament was held in Brisbane. Jacob Daly (Year 10) was also part of the squad who later became unavailable due to his commitments to represent the College’s Concert Band in New York.The team competed against the various Australian State sides (Western Australian, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, ACT, New South Wales, and Tasmania) playing 6 games in total. Despite the results and playing against bigger players, the ‘Cross Whites’ competed well gaining much valuable international experience. Not only did they have to deal with those issue but the elements as well. “Playing in 27oC heat and on hard grounds was an experience” Ben said.

Australian Tour 2013
Fundraising is underway for our seven day tour for 30 players plus management in 2013. We will play St Stanislaus College and St Augustines College both Catholic schools in NSW, Australia. The aim of the tour is to develop a relationship with other Catholic schools, and for our
boys to gain valuable life experiences that will help them to develop into fine young Marist Men.

Congratulations to Niko Malo-Fuiavailiili has been named for the wider NZ under 20 Squad. If he does well in that he may be going to the World Cup next year.
At the Waikato Rugby Union Prizegiving Logan Asplin the 1st XV Coach was nominated for the Waikato Secondary School coach of the year. This is an indication that he is considered to be one of the top coaches in the region

SCHOLARSHIPS
Each year the College will offer a number of Scholarships to students entering the College and also to students already in the College. The Grace Family also offer a number of scholarships for new students entering the College. The purpose of such scholarships will be to encourage talented and/or deserving students to enrol at the College as well as rewarding students who have been an active part of the College family for some time.
Scholarships will be for the duration of one year only. Applications close 30th November 2012.
Scholarships will be offered in areas including:
SPECIAL CHARACTER
Four scholarships of $500 each, three to students entering the College and one to a student already at the College. Six Grace Family scholarships of $500 each, to Yr9 students entering the College. To be decided on by the contribution students make to the Special Character of the contributing school or in the College.
ACADEMIC
Four Scholarships of $800 each, two to students entering the College and two to students already at the College. Two Grace Family Scholarships of $500 each, to Yr 9 students entering the College. Scholarships are to be awarded on the basis of outstanding academic performance at the contributing school or in the College.
MUSIC
A sum of $1500 is available to Music students entering the College. This could be distributed as three scholarships of $500 each but the final distribution is decided by the Principal.
CULTURAL
Two scholarships of $500 each to students who show a strong commitment to cultural pursuits.
SPORT
Six scholarships of $500 each to students who have a particular talent in sport.
