Wiltshire Creative has been created from the three Salisbury arts organisations receiving Arts Council NPO funding with the goal of building on the success of the individual organisations to offer an increased range of performances and activities to the people of Salisbury, Wiltshire and beyond.

The Scenic Maker supports the Head of Workshop in realising and building set designs for all Wiltshire Creative productions to the required high standard across two sites and different venues.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Set Construction
  • Pre-production work
  • Maintenance
  • Health and Safety

These responsibilities involve a number of key activities as outlined below:

Set Construction

  • To produce scenery, using a variety of techniques, to deadlines set by the Head of Workshop / Head of Production for Main House, Salberg, Youth Theatre productions and Take Part Programme projects
  • To occasionally produce scenery for other theatre companies
  • To assist with the fit-up on stage
  • To be prepared to work late hours and weekends
  • To undertake strenuous and physically demanding work
  • To undertake prop making and scenic art as required

Pre-production work

  • To realise designs from plans and models
  • To order materials

Maintenance

  • To carry out repairs to scenery and properties where necessary
  • To take care of tools and equipment adhering to good housekeeping practices both in the workshop and on stage.
  • To carry out repairs/improvements to the theatre buildings as skills and time allow

Health and Safety

  • To follow all Health and Safety procedures both in the workshop and on stage
  • To undertake training in the use of equipment where necessary
  • To keep up to date with Health and Safety legislation regarding set construction and installation.

General

  • To represent and positively promote the organisation at all levels
  • To participate in any requisite training or staff development programmes.
  • To always act in the best interests of Wiltshire Creative
  • To take positive action to promote Equal Opportunities in all aspects of the work of Wiltshire Creative

CANDIDATE SPECIFICATION

Essential

  • A working knowledge of scenery construction
  • Practical experience and knowledge of safely working with workshop tools and machinery
  • Work with a variety of materials
  • Work as part of a team
  • Ability to work anti-social hours (evenings and weekends)
  • Professional approach to work whilst maintaining high standards and exercising quality control
  • Ability to work with a range of directors and designers.
  • Reasonable standard of physical fitness (this job involves manual handling)

Desirable

  • A knowledge of Health and Safety issues
  • Driver’s licence and willingness to drive the theatre van
  • Computer literate and knowledge of CAD drawing
  • MIG welding
  • Experience of prop making
  • Experience of scene painting

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

  • Salary:£19,000.00 per annum
  • Hours:Annualised up to 42 hours per week on a rota basis
  • Holiday:224 hours (32 days) annual leave per year including statutory bank holidays rising in line with length of service
  • Pension:Wiltshire Creative offers a pension scheme through People’s Pension, whereby contributions will be deducted from salary and is currently matched by Wiltshire Creative up to 1.5% of salary rising in line with auto-enrolment regulations

Wiltshire Creative is legally obliged to auto-enrol all eligible employees into this scheme after three months’ employment, although the employee has the right to ‘opt out’.
