French

August, 2016

Dear Parents,

My name is Sarah Chapman and I would like to welcome you and your child to French. Learning a foreign language requires that your child takes on a great deal of personal responsibility for participating in class as well as practicing and using the language both inside and outside the classroom. The Common Core requirements of speaking and writing will be emphasized and are part of daily lessons.

Required class materials:

3 ring binder (may be shared with other classes) – for notes, classwork and homework – graded each triad

One 2 - pocket paper folder with fasteners used for turning in notes each triad

Student handbook

2 -3 highlighters

Red pen or pencil

300 3x5 index cards

Internet access for homework: www.wvhsmustangs.net www.quia.com/web

AERIES account; www.glencoe.com/sites/california/student/worldlang/index.html

*Students may use school computers after school to access the internet for homework

To insure a successful year of study your child needs to follow the WVHS classroom norms:

1.  BE ON TIME – students earn daily participation points which cannot be made up if absent or tardy to class

Students will be assigned lunch time detention after the 3rd unexcused tardy and for every tardy there after

2.  COME PREPARED – Always bring the required class materials – notebook, pens/pencils paper and flash cards

3.  RESPECT OTHERS

4.  PARTICIPATE

5.  CELL PHONE, IPODS, MP3 PLAYERS AND ALL OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES TURNED OFF – unless being used under the direction and supervision of the teacher

Homework and grades

Homework will often require Internet access and is most often in the form of note taking from power point presentations posted on the West Valley High School home page (www.wvhsmustangs.net) Other homework exercises and activities may also be assigned on www.quia.com/web and www.glencoe.com/sites/california/student/worldlang/index.html

-  Grades are based on point accumulation and are composed of the following categories:

Homework, Writing (French 3 and AP), Classwork, Oral, Tests, quizzes and projects

Make up and absent work: Late homework will be accepted for ½ credit if done within two days. If your child is absent it is his/her responsibility to make up missed work and tests. Tests must be made up within one week of an excused absence; two days for every day absent is given to make up homework. Test and quiz make up will be done in class.

Extra Credit: One extra credit assignment MAY be available each triad

Tutoring: By appointment.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about your child in my class.
