1Product use manuals are available from manufacturers and should be consulted in all training situations.
2The double loop joining knot is regarded as an inferior knot for joining wire. Manufacturers’ recommendations should be consulted in choosing knots appropriate to wire types.
3Personal protection equipment appropriate to the task is selected and used in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications and the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Install tie back assemblies.
Performance criteria
1.1Brace wire is adequate to withstand final loading without exceeding yield point.
1.2Brace wire is tied off to ensure flood gate final loading.
1.3Dead man tie back is installed 30 degrees back from vertical, with diameter and depth sufficient to withstand the final loading.
Element 2
Select and hang flood gates.
Performance criteria
2.1Construction and design of gate selected are suitable for site requirements.
Rangeincludes but is not limited to – type of stock for containment, peak water flow, low water flow.
2.2Flood gate structure is installed independent of fence.
2.3Brace wire is above high water mark, and gate is hung parallel with, and just above, normal water flow.
2.4No debris is discarded in water.
