_____Driven by Crisis: the Casualization of the Academic Workforce

Raye A. Robertson, UPTF-AFT 477, Wayne State University

An especially troubling dilemma for faculty that we will explore in this workshop is: How can we resist the casualization and downgrading of the market value of today’s academic workforce when the prevailing message is more and more that “anyone can teach?”This workshop aims to stimulate discussion and constructive solutions.

_____Leadership Development and Membership Involvement

John Hinshaw, President, Pennsylvania AAUP; Lebanon Valley College

Tim Blessing, Vice President,Pennsylvania AAUP; Alvernia University

This workshop surveys some of the theoretical and practical problemsfaced by chapter and state-wide officers. It also goes over some of the practical strategies that the AAUP uses to develop strong chapters and organizations.

_____Who’s Accountable to Whom?

Mark Smith, NEA

This workshop will look at a variety of tools, including NEA policy, and debate the kinds of strategies we will need to develop to ensure that higher education is not hamstrung by management fads, yet has the levels of public support needed to do our jobs.

____Promoting Faculty Development: Administrative Practice vs. Institutional Principle

Gerald Lee Ratliff, SUNY Potsdam

This workshop explores well-crafted strategic approaches to promote active faculty development initiatives. The workshop draws a meaningful distinction between administrative vs. faculty perspectives on professional development, including basic practices and principles related to budget allocation, assessment, and program activities
