Through the Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership (MMP), the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (UWM) is offering free courses in spring 2009 for K-8 teachers and administrators in the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) to deepen their mathematics content knowledge and to enhance their mathematics instruction.
Through funding from the National Science Foundation, the MMP allows for waiver of resident, off-campus tuition at the undergraduate level. Audits will not be permitted. If you are currently enrolled in a graduate program in which the course fulfills a requirement, you may apply for a graduate tuition waiver.
Enrollment is limited in each course. An application must be submitted no later than December 19, 2008. Late applications will be considered only if space is available. A confirmation letter will be sent to your school in Januaryif you have been accepted into a spring course. UWM course registration will be completed at the first class session.

General Course Goals
- Develop understanding of mathematical content and the MPS Learning Targets.
- Expand insights on ways students develop mathematical ideas and reason mathematically.
- Deepen knowledge of the teaching, learning, and assessment of mathematics.
General Course Expectations
- Participate in all class sessions and complete all course assignments.
- Read, share, and develop strategies to improve students’ mathematical knowledge and reasoning.
- Align classroom teaching and student learning with the depth of mathematics embedded in the MPS Learning Targets.

Number and Computation:Addition and Subtraction

This course examines how students build their understanding of number and number relationships. The course focus will be on developing number sense, basic fact strategies, and computational fluency for addition and subtraction. Course content will be appropriate for elementary teachers of grades K-4 as well as special education teachers of grades K-8.

Instructor: Sharonda Harris / This course examines how students build their understanding of number and number relationships. The course focus will be on developing number sense and computational fluency for multiplication and division. Course content will be appropriate for elementary teachers of grades 3-6 as well as special education teachers of grades 3-8.

Exploring Early Number Relationships

This course focuses on the development of early number concepts and how children in K4, K5, and grade 1 build number sense. Participants will explore number relationships using dot cards, ten frames, and student work samples. Participants will also examine how the MPS CABS support the development of number sense.

Michelle Douglas-Meyer / This is a unique opportunity for teams of regular education and special education teachers. The course focus will be on developing number sense, basic facts, and computational fluency for all learners as well as low-memory intensive algorithms. Special attention will be given to strategies for working with struggling and special education students.
