Chapter 23 – Overseas Expansion

For this the assignment, you will be reading about specific examples of American imperialism and making some judgments about America’s involvement. Using Chapter 23, ABC-CLIO, and the video clips online, read and listen about the topics and record essential information in order to help answer the essential question. The instructions are simple: For each of the topics, you need to summarize America's involvement with the country or area discussed. You may use bulleted points. After that, analyze the situation and give American involvement a "thumbs up" or a "thumbs down", and support your opinion. An example has been provided!

YOU MAY DO THIS WITH A PARTNER OR TWO – JUST MAKE SURE YOU ALL ACTUALLY WORK ON IT, AND PUT ALL NAMES ON EACH ASSIGNMENT!

ALASKA (EXAMPLE)
FACTS:
·  1867 - Secretary of State Seward negotiated a treaty with Russia, purchasing Alaska for $7.2 million
·  huge area - twice the size of Texas
·  Seward wanted to expand the American empire
·  the purchase was ridiculeduntil gold and eventually oil was found there
/ OPINION and RATIONALE /
I think this was a great move for the U.S. It gave the U.S. valuable resources (gold and oil), and also serves as a buffer between the U.S. and Russia. Plus, it was dirt cheap,no one was hurt, and the U.S. wasn't being a bully.
