Public Health Laboratory Assistant

LTE Intern

General Responsibilities

Technical, analytical work in the City Public Health Laboratory and in the field under the direction of professional staff providing support for the field and laboratory services. Required knowledge of microbiology and chemistry, understanding the principles of field sample collection and sample handling as well as laboratory techniques. Requires a valid Driver's License.

This person will help sampling and testing drinking water, food and recreational water samples and will also work to fill in as a summer employee in the laboratory/field services to assist in beach water quality monitoring.

Minimum Qualifications Required at Time of Application

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of environmental sciences, including microbiology and chemistry and bacteriology or related field. Knowledge of laboratory and field techniques; understanding of the principles of field sample collection and sample handling as well as laboratory techniques. Requires a valid Driver's License Ability to follow and understand technical directions.

Training and Experience:

Six month’s experience in a laboratory or a setting performing similar type of work. Such experience may be gained post high school graduation by at least two years of college or technical school training in relevant areas. Other combinations of training/experience that demonstrate the possession of necessary knowledge, skills and abilities will also be considered.

Enter data into databases and website

Perform environmental sample tests under professional oversight

Maintain testing equipment

30 % Field work – collect samples, perform field testing and deliver samples materials for microbiology and chemistry laboratories

Follow standard operating procedures for collecting microbiological and chemical samples

Follow approved sample handling, preservation and storage procedures

30 % Laboratory glassware preparation and equipment care

Prepare, clean and sterilize, and label sample containers and other equipment.
