The following series of documents would be used during Unit C of the Word unit once tabs have been introduced to students. This entire series of lessons takes approximately 1 ½ days.

Tab Stops Formative Assessment

Open a Word document. Save it as tab stops. Recreate the following document using tabs! Do the best you can. Don’t know how to do something? Do as much as you remember!

Setting Tab Stops Practice Activities—GROUP 1

Follow the directions below. Words are formatted with bold and italics for emphasis only. Do not format them this way unless directed.

  1. Open a new document and save it as Holiday Sale.
  2. At the top of the document type the title Holiday Sale-A-Bration!.
  3. After the title put a double-space (hit ENTER 2 times).
  4. Set the following three tabs—Double-click the ruler bar or click the Paragraph launcher button on the Home Ribbon, then choose the Tabs button in the lower left corner
  5. Center Tab at 1”
  6. Center Tab at 3.5”
  7. Center Tab at 5.5”
  8. Hit Tab so that you are at the 1st Center Tab at 1”.
  9. Type Sale Item.
  10. Hit Tab and Type Regular Price.
  11. Hit Tab and Type Sale Price.
  12. Hit Enter.
  13. Double-click one of your existing tabs. You should now be in the tabs dialog box. You should see three tabs in the tab stop position box at the top left.
  14. Click the Clear All button to remove all tabs.
  15. Set two new tabs—
  16. Decimal Tab at 3.5”
  17. Decimal Tab at 5.5”
  18. Type the following information—Hit Tab only after the item name and the regular price:

Soft & Comfy Terry Cloth Robes 45.99 35.99

Sea Shell Shower Curtain 20.99 16.99

Sea Shell Bath Mat 14.99 11.99

  1. Format the title Holiday Sale-A-Bration! 16 point font and bold. Center the title.
  2. Format the headings Sale Item, Regular Price, and Sale Price 14 point font and bold.
  3. Format the title and all price information with a 1 ½ point shadow border around the outside of the text.
  4. Shade the title and all price information with light gray shading.
  5. Insert a header with your name (Insert RibbonHeader)
  6. Save your document.
  7. Raise your hand. Mrs. Sterne will check your document and then you may move on to the next assignment.

Follow the directions below. Words are formatted with bold and italics for emphasis only. Do not format them this way unless directed.

  1. Start a new Word document called table of contents.
  2. Recreate the table of contents page shown in the illustration. You will need to use the following tab stops:
  3. Left Tab at 0.5”, Left Tab with Leaders at 6.25”, & Right Tab at 6.5”
  4. Put your name in the header, save, and print.

  2. The holiday sale is coming up in a few weeks. Your boss has asked you to recreate the information sheet below, which will be posted at all cash registers for the cashiers to reference. Be sure to format the text so it looks like the text below.

Follow the directions below. Words are formatted with bold and italics for emphasis only. Do not format them this way unless directed.

  1. Start a new Word document called table of contents.
  2. You are creating a cookbook as a gift for your mom or grandma. You need to create a Table of Contents page for the cookbook. Your Table of Contents will have sections, such as Appetizers, Salads, etc. It will list the specific recipe names under each section. Create a Table of Contents for your cookbook. Look at the example attached to these directions.
  3. You may not just recreate the Table of Contents example.
  4. You must have the same five main sections for your cookbook as shown in the example (Appetizers, Salads, etc.).
  5. You must have a total of 20 different recipes listed under your five sections. You can break the recipes up however you would like. For example, you might have 5 under appetizers and only 1 under salads.
  6. You will need to set three tabs. One tab will use leaders.
  7. Pay attention to the spacing used between headings! Use your Show/Hide button!
  8. Put your name in the header, save, and print.

  4. 5 ¼” Decimal Tab
  1. Change some of your tabs to have leaders to make the information easier to read.
  1. Format the title and subtitle so that it stands out from the rest of the information.
  2. Format the rest of the information with borders and shading so it is attractive and professional looking.
  1. Put your name in the header of the document.
  1. Save the document as tab stop quiz. Print and put in the tray.
  2. Return this sheet to Mrs. Sterne.
