Purpose

The National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Level 2) with strands in Machine Shearing Crossbred Wool, Machine Shearing Fine Wool, Blade Shearing, and Wool Handling [Ref:1050] is intended as an entry qualification for people new to the wool harvesting industry. The qualification is suitable for people entering the wool harvesting industry with either no previous experience or limited wool harvesting industry skills.

This stranded qualification is designed to recognise the skills needed by the wool harvesting sectors – machine shearing, blade shearing, and wool handling. People pursuing careers in the shearing industry can select one of the shearing strands, and those pursuing a career in wool handling in a woolshed environment can select the wool handling strand. The shearing strands also recognise a further specialisation in either crossbred wool or fine wool.

The stranded structure recognises that there are common skills for both career pathways. This is reflected in the core compulsory section which includes skills required for all new entrants regardless of whether they are interested in shearing or wool handling. These core compulsory skills relate to wool pressing, woolshed work practices, health and safety, teamwork, employee responsibilities, injury management, and nutritional requirements for work.

On completion of this qualification people can pathway onto the following qualifications:

  • National Certificate in Shearing (Machine Shearing Crossbred Wool) (Level3) [Ref:1051]
  • National Certificate in Shearing (Machine Shearing Fine Wool) (Level3) [Ref:1052], National Certificate in Shearing (Blade Shearing) (Level3) [Ref:1053]
  • National Certificate in Wool Handling (Wool Pressing) (Level3) [Ref:1057]
  • National Certificate in Wool Handling with an optional strand in Grading Wool [Ref:1058].

A qualification pathways diagram can be found at the end of this document.

This qualification has been replaced by the National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Entry) (Level 2) with strands in Learner Shearer, and Learner Wool Handler [Ref: 1546] and the National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Junior Shearer) (Level 2) [Ref: 1547].

Version 1 of this qualification replaced the National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Introductory Machine Shearing) [Ref:0575]. It also partly replaces the Machine Shearing Junior and Machine Shearing Intermediate strands of the replaced National Certificate in Shearing[Ref:0571].
