ASSIGNMENT #1

Guidelines

You will be required to make a five minute speech about something that interests you. You may speak about anything that you want to—a hobby or favorite activity, someone who has inspired you, or any topic that you want to learn more about. The speech should be delivered extemporaneously (i.e., from brief notes). That means that you are not to read your speech and should use as much eye contact as possible.

To prepare for this speech, you should go to the library (or other reference area) and find at least three pieces of reference material for your speech. Those references may come from any source that seems appropriate (consult Chapter 7). However, one of those sources must come from a magazine or newspaper printed the day, week, or month from the year that you were born. That source may be an article, advertisement, photograph, editorial, etc. from your birth newspaper or magazine that relates to your topic in some meaningful way. This way you can make a personal connection between you and your topic and your audience can learn something about you.

  • To speak within your time limit
  • To cite once for every minute that you speak
  • To deliver a properly phrased central idea

  • A bibliography of your sources. The bibliography must include at least three different sources, be alphabetized, and be written in APA format. NO WIKIPEDIA. You may not list more than one Internet source.
  • A copy of the article, advertisement, editorial, etc. printed the day, week, or month from the year that you were born.
  • Written evaluations of speeches by your classmates. You will be required (as part of your class participation grade) to critique those who speak the day before you speak and selecting the BEST SPEAKER per day using the links on my website. Please consult your speaker numbers handout to determine when you will be evaluating.

ASSIGNMENT #4

Guidelines

You will be divided into 4-5 member groups and will be required to develop an infomercial about a UNCW product or service that is persuasive in purpose. Thus, your goal should be to motivate your classmates to purchase/utilize the product or service. Please review the list of Student Services for suggestions.

Your group will have 15-20 minutes to present your infomercial using Monroe’s Motivated Sequence. That means that your group will be graded on its ability to gain attention, highlight the need/problem, offer a solution, visualize satisfaction, and motivate audience to action. As such, your group will need to research your product/service and make appropriate references during the presentation. A minimum of five sources should be consulted for this assignment.

In addition to your research, you must incorporate audiovisual aids. That is, you may present your entire infomercial live or on videotape; one member may narrate the entire presentation using PowerPoint or the narration may be divided among group members; or roleplays may be incorporated to reveal the severity of the problem and the practicality of the solution. Just make certain that all members participate equally during the planning phase of this assignment and one member of your group introduces all of the members and the group topic.

You will be graded as a group for this assignment. That means that every member of the group gets the same grade (performance score–25%; cohesiveness–15%; quality of information score–50%; written materials score–10%). Therefore, careful attention should be paid to how well your group delivers the presentation, works together, and applies Monroe’s Motivated Sequence.

Required paperwork to be submitted when your group presents

  • An outline of your presentation. The outline must be TYPEWRITTEN and include the members names, the UNCW product/service, and a summary of how your group applied each part of Monroe’s Motivated Sequence to your topic.
  • A bibliography of your sources. The bibliography must include at least five sources, alphabetized, and be written in APA format. NO WIKIPEDIA. Only two sources may come from the Internet.
  • Written evaluations of your group members using the group evaluation form. Please complete one form per member.
