Capstone Poster Presentation is on 3/24/16 in the nursing building from 1300-1500. Please wear your scrubs. (This is a community event; the entire campus will be invited to attend as will nurse recruiters).

Poster Presentation to public:

Develop a poster on a current trend or issue in nursing. The poster will be presented for viewing, and the students will give an oral presentation to describe and promote the poster and topic to the instructor when asked on day of presentations. Students will partner with another student (two students to a poster). Posters will be presented to the campus in the foyer of the Nursing and Allied Health Sciences Building. The poster should be standard size of the tri-fold type of posters utilized for presentations.

Graduating nursing students encounter practice behaviors demonstrated in the clinical setting that conflict with standards of practice learned in their academic program. They refer to these situations as “real world” nursing. However, the real world practices of registered nurses are sometimes, according to evidence presented in nursing-related literature, subpar. Our concern is that students will adopt subpar practices as they begin their careers. The purpose of your Evidence Based Practice Poster Presentation assignment is to empower students to determine appropriate nursing actions when presented with conflicting information about clinical practice situations and to instill a sense of responsibility for sharing findings from the literature with other nurses.

Students should be able to demonstrate ability to analyze and present findings by developing a poster presentation. Specifically:

1.  Identify behavior demonstrated by a nurse during a situation encountered in clinical that was incongruent with practice standards learned in nursing courses.

2.  Search nursing-related literature for evidence supporting nursing practice appropriate to the situation.

3.  Create a poster that presents findings and scholarly references.

4.  Present poster to students, faculty and staff during a poster session scheduled at the end of the nursing program.

The average age of our nursing students is 31 so we considered Malcolm Knowles’ Characteristics of Adult Learners when developing this assignment.

·  Adults are autonomous and self-directed. We do not limit topics for the posters to nursing areas taught in our course. Instead, we encourage them to select a topic from any area of nursing which is interesting to them.

·  Adults have accumulated a foundation of life experiences and knowledge. We encourage students to select topics that represent clinical experiences and have resulted in cognitive dissonance.
