A)Theses awards are open to HCS staff from the life sciences, clinical physiology or the physical sciences, and who are:

HCS Practitioner-level1 staff and seeking post-registration / postgraduate development.

or those substantively employed and working towards Clinical Scientist registration via ACS ‘Route 2’ or AHCS ‘Equivalence’.

These awards exclude (NES) supernumerary Clinical Scientist trainees, those university employed staff with honorary NHS HCS appointments, and any previous successful applicant who has had 3 or more such awards.

B)The application form contains, a scored 'section 3'. The Common Core List(CCL) is intrinsic to thisas it defines the postgraduate scientist cohort. CCL embodies shared attributes for any HCS postgraduate scientist irrespective of professional grade or specialty. For the purposes of these awards CCL supersedes any professional body presumption or direction as to who is a scientist.

C)Applications should show credible training plan that engages with the Common Core List - not just a bid to do an MSc. We are interested in your development as a scientist.

D)A CV or elements of a job descriptionare not atraining plan.Terminology such as “I will do XYZ”, is far stronger than “I could do XYZ”, or, “XYZ will be factored in”.Similarly, statements like “I already attend...” or “I have previously done...” do not constitute a training plan. If you are already engaged in some way then explain whatthe added value of an award would be.

E)Write your own application. Do not share or recycle narrative.

1 / Funding. This application is for support to Boards in financial year 2015-16 only. All fees / costs should be met in this accounting period.
2 / CCL Costs. An estimate of costs for your development in fulfilment of CCL. NOTE: this component is not a research / bench / travel allowance to do a Masters programme alone. There is no allowance for ‘backfill’.
Application form footnote - page 2
3 / Timeframe. It is recognised that in the period of academic study you have chosen, it is unlikely that all CCL can be demonstrated. Explain what you feel you can realistically achieve.
Scoring criteria used by NES external assessors for section 3.
Think about how you would score your own application; this is how the assessors will:
0 - Application does not address issue
1 - Application makes a weak case in addressing issue
2 - Application makes a credible case in addressing issue to develop this individual
3 - Application makes a credible case, with a clear realistic plan that utilises educational solutions potentially available to others.
