Lawrence Jahue "Spanky" Wade of Grayson, GA, formerly of Stone Mountain, GA, retired from Continental Insurance Company after forty-one years of service as Commercial Line Underwriting Director and Executive Underwriter, Special Accounts. He wasn’t a world leader or a famous scientist, just a wonderful husband, father, and paw-paw. He wasn't a war hero, just a staff sergeant in the United States Army with the 3rd Armored Division stationed in Fort Knox, Kentucky and in Frankfort, Germany for 2 years. He also served in the United States Naval Reserves. He wasn't a great sports figure, although he was a graduate of Stone Mountain High School, Class of 1949. He lettered in football (Capt.), basketball (Capt.) and baseball (Capt.).

He attended the Atlanta Division of the University of Georgia and received his insurance degree from Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas. He was a founding member of Stone Mountain High School Touchdown and Tip Off clubs, serving for 4 years each. He won the Stone Mountain Jaycee Distinguished Service Award in 1971. He was an active little league coach for basketball and football at McCurdy Park, Stone Mountain, GA and President of Stone Mountain Midget Football League in 1970 and co-chairman of the Stone Mountain Sports Association. He was a PTA representative, member of Stone Mountain Community Council and Recreation Committee.

Mr. Wade was proud to be an active member of Stone Mountain Lodge No. 449 F&AM. He served as chaplain for seven years and treasurer for two years. He was chosen Mason of the Year in 2001 and 2003. He was chairman of the Billy K. Wages, Sr. Memorial Golf Tournament for many years. He was also a Noble of the Yaarab Shriners of Atlanta.

An avid golfer, Mr. Wade was a founding member of the Atlanta Jr. Golf program and a member of the Senior Golfers Association of Atlanta. He was well known throughout East DeKalb County in sports circles. He was a referee for the Georgia High School Association of Referees, Atlanta area, refereed in DeKalb County for 21 years and refereed Jr. College basketball for many years. Mr. Wade was a member of Stone Mountain First Baptist Church. He loved to meet with the "Old Men of the Mountain" and after moving to Grayson, he met with the Grayson Senior Citizens Group for Friday morning coffee.

Mr. Wade was a wonderful, loving husband, father, and grandfather and friend to many. He loved God, his family, Stone Mountain, GA, and the Georgia Bulldogs. His family is honored to have the Charity Celebrity Golf Classic, Stone Mountain Lodge #449, dedicated to his memory.
