Description

In Math6, we teach the Common Core State Standards and will be focusing on ratio and proportional reasoning, number systems, statistics and probability, expressions and equations, and geometry. These concepts are integrated and taught using the Connected Mathematics 3 curriculum, a six book series, along with Common Core and district materials.

Students will engage in problem-based lessons structured around a core idea. Students are held responsible for high academic rigor, analysis, and critical thinking, and to communicate their mathematical findings in writing and/or oral presentations in a clear and convincing manner.Guided by a knowledgeable teacher, students will interact in groups to foster mathematical conversations.Group interaction is an integral part of the learning process in class.Thedaily activities in this course depend on students working and having discussions in teams tomake sense of concepts.

Behavior Expectations

All members of the classroom community are expected to act in a manner that is respectful to themselves, others, and the learning environment.Students who behave in a way that does not follow these guidelines will follow the process outlined below until the behavior is corrected:

  1. Warning/Buddy Room with Reflection Sheet
  2. Conference with teacher/Parent Contact
  3. Referral

Parent Involvement

Parent involvement goes a long way in your child’s education. Our goal is to have clear communication so that you are aware of what is going on in our classroom. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us. We share the same goal… your child’s success!

Work Habits and Citizenship

A work habits grade will be earned based on participation in class and timeliness of work turned in. A citizenship grade will be earned based on behavior and the number of unexcused tardies. Effort and a great attitude go a long way!

Both the “Work Habits” and the Citizenship grade will be assigned as follows:

OOutstanding

SSatisfactory

NNeeds improvement

UUnsatisfactory

Grading

Academic grades are mainlybased on assessments (tests and quizzes), which will demonstrate how well your student understands the current concepts. Parents are able to view their child’s grade progression on ParentVUE.Assessments make up 60% of the total grade. Homework will make up 30% and classwork will make up the remaining 10%.The percentage of points earned will be assigned a letter grade as follows:

A = 90%-100%

B = 80%-89%

C = 70%-79%

D = 60%-69%

F = Below 60%

Attendance Policy/Make-up Work/Extra Math Support

Due to the problem solving nature of the Connected Mathematics 3curriculum, attendance each day is essential for student success. If your student should be absent, it is their responsibility to make-up all work missed. Students are expected to be on time to class. Tardies will be dealt with following the progression of consequences outlined in the student handbook. It is the students’ responsibility tocome for class prepared.Students are welcome to stay after school to work with their math teacher for additional support in math Thursdays until 3:15. The after-school program has a Homework Club that also could be a good option for your child.

Interactive Notebook

This year ALL math students will need a spiral notebook, to be used as a math journal, each semester. We recommend a one-subject, Five Star notebook because they are built to last all year and have larger pages. The math journal will be used to hold math reference pages, corrected assessments, classwork, and notes from class. Keeping these notebooks organized and complete will be a part of the students’ classwork grade.

Homework

Homework will be given on a weekly basis. It is meant to reinforce concepts we are investigating in class and be guided practice toward mastery of standards, with a focus on calculations and problem-solving. Homework will be handed out on Mondays and will be due the last day of each school week. Homework will require a parent signature when complete. We feel that this will help your child share the learning going on in the classroom.

We are very excited to be starting this new school year with your child. Transitioning into middle school can be a challenge, we are here to help make this transition smoother and valuable for you and your child. This year, we have new opportunities to integrate technology into our classrooms, creating an engaging learning environment. It is a great time to be starting 6th grade at Parrish Middle School!

My child and I have read through the syllabus.
