Shared some unique foods with this question- would you or would you not eat and why?
#1 / Debbie Field
Fried calves’ brains on white bread- a common St. Louis dish until mad cow disease hit / Was a vegetarian long time back when she lived in CA but has since long reverted to eating meat. Mother used to make sweetbreads and so would eat this dish vs. starving.
#2 / Richie Deason
Rocky Mountain Oysters / Would love a testicle. Having served in the Navy, used to be served whatever was out there. Has tried a pig’s ear in the past.
#3 / Jim Dawson
Casu Marzu- Rotten Sardinian cheese with larvae that jump / Would try as one should never forego an opportunity. Churchill said, “Never, never, never, never give up.”
#4 / Amanda Johnson
Balut- Fertilized eggs with nearly developed duck/chicken etc. / Might eat it potentially under “clean eating” criteria (eat anything as long as I know what’s in it)
7:40 / 5 minute break
7:45 / Introduction of Speakers / Toastmaster
#1 / Title: “15 minutes of fame” / Damon Mason
Manual: CC
Project #1 Icebreaker, Time: 4-6 min.
Objectives:
- To begin speaking before an audience
- To discover speaking skills you already have and skills that need some attention.
- Jan 15, 2015 had closed a big deal and was living the high life
- Received a call to be on the Maury Show
- Decided to go to NYC despite the risk
- Ended up being a Valentines themed episode
- Relished the 15 min. of fame
#2 / Title: “Why would you not?” / Rob Goodwin
Manual: CC
Project: #2 Organize your speech
Time: 5-7 min.
Objectives:
- Select an appropriate outline which allows listeners to easily follow and understand your speech.
- Make your message clear, with supporting material directly contributing to that message.
- Use appropriate transitions when moving from one idea to another.
- Create a strong opening and conclusion.
- Shared 3 facts and 3 actions to consider
- Opening:
- World getting warmer- 12 hottest years recorded since 1998
- 97% scientists agree that global warming is real
- Facts:
- Greenhouse gases like water vapor and CO2 trap heat
- CO2 concentration increasing
- All else being equal, more CO2 will make planet hotter
- CITI study estimates $70 Trillion impact before century is out; so if global warming might be real, why would you not take a few small steps to mitigate the risk
- Actions:
- Change 5 most used bulbs to LED
- Move thermostat up a few degrees in the summer and down a few in the winter
- Car pool, take transit, walk/bike when you can
#3 / Title: “The first time ever should never be your last time” / Clifton Foo
Manual: CC
Project: #5 Your Body Speaks
Time: 5-7 min.
Objectives:
- Use stance, movement, gestures, facial expressions and eye contact to express your message and achieve your speech's purpose.
- Make your body language smooth and natural.
- Never forget your first love, first major experiences and big failures
- Entered a speaking competition at school with 400-500 spectators and panicked when he peered out from backstage and saw the mass of humanity
- Forgot all the lines- unmitigated disaster
- Another time, decided to do a final lap in the pool with a friend but the friend started drowning due to cramps
- Decided to play hero and save the friend but the friend grabbed on to Clifton’s neck and tried to use him like a float. Survived somehow but couldn’t swim competitively for a few years.
- Was dumped by first love- ouch!
- Message- Confront first fears or you’ll never get on in life. First time should ever should never be your last time
#4 / Title: “Your Body is Smart” / Brock Davis
Manual: CC
Project: #5 Your Body Speaks
Time: 5-7 min.
Objectives:
- Please see above
- Your body has aches and pains and that’s the body’s attempt to tell you something
- Are Chiropractors quacks?
- Had a sore Achilles tendon after playing basketball and doctor found a half inch deposit of calcium on the tendon
- Chose not to undergo surgery and take up visits with a Chiropractor
- First visit showed things out of alignment- a back adjustment made Brock feel like a Rice Crispy as his back went snap, crackle, pop.
- Message- listen to your body when it’s trying to tell you something
8:30 / Evaluations / Lisa Kiblinger, General Evaluator
Yale Nogin For Damon Mason / Highlights:
- Fantastic imagery- took us there
- Brought audience in with the story
- Used some advanced tools, e.g. the chair as a prop
- Great tone
- Left us wanting more with the cliffhanger ending
- Key suggestion for improvement:
- Tell us more about who you are- speech hinted at items but didn’t divulge all
Mack MillerForRob Goodwin / Highlights:
- Told us what you’ll tell us, then told us and then recapped at the end again
- Call to action was clear- do simple things
- Key suggestion for improvement:
- Slow down a bit- spoke fast in some sections
- Focus on a little less data and more on emphasis in some parts
- Project voice more
- Results of global warming, if true, would be drastic- could have been more dramatic there
- More emphatic delivery of Clint Eastwood’s “Do you feel lucky” line
Tom Nixon For Clifton Foo / Highlights:
- Spectacular story telling display
- Set up the title, developed it and brought it back in the end- advanced technique
- Body truly spoke- peeked from behind the stage curtain, choked himself
- Came through because it was Clifton’s story- authentic
- Self-deprecating humor
- Great, knowing smile and message at the end
- Key suggestions for improvement:
- Do it again
Judy Anderson For Brock Davis / Highlights:
- Lot of great humor and imagery- being flipped over by the chiropractor, demonstration with hands to show what chiropractor did with the feet
- Engaging, natural speaker
- Not nervous- great eye contact
- Key suggestions for improvement:
- More broad/big gestures
- More imagery- could have done more with playing basketball, limping etc.
