AT THE PHARMACY

FOLLOW-UP LISTENING LESSON - AT THE PHARMACY - Aldo Gatti

Level: Benchmark 3 Time: 1.5 hours

Aim: Ss will understand vocabulary regarding: i) auxiliary prescription warning labels and patient information labels ii) listening to an automated pharmacy telephone message and check comprehension to prompts. Labels are introduced as part of what Ss will see on their prescriptions.

Language Focus: Ss will learn the following vocabulary regarding their prescriptions [refill, renew, pick-up, auxiliary label, warning label, patient information label, including star (*), and pound (#)], and will be exposed to the imperative/commands including negative commands. (Drink plenty of water…Do not drink alcohol… Stay away from the sun. ) Explain that the imperative is a verb form that is used to give orders, instructions, advice, etc. and that it is formed by using the base infinitive of the verb (the infinitive without to).

Pre-listening Stage:

Pre-teach difficult/new vocabulary (see above) from the listening task (as well as touching on prescription warning labels and patient information labels). Ask Ss what kind of labels they may find on a prescription. Write on blackboard the answers given. Explain that certain prescription medications require warning/information labels and that they are usually written as commands/imperatives. Pass around a sheet of common prescription auxiliary warning and patient information labels and have each student select one and read it to the class. Provide a handout of some typical label warning and exercise for Ss to do.

Comprehension check:

·  Ss to do handout and check with their partners. Answers are presented to class.

Materials: Handouts of prescription warning labels. Handout of automated pharmacy telephone message.

Listening:

Ss to listen to automated pharmacy telephone message (Obtained by calling 416-444-4445. See transcript of message attached). Ss to pair up and take turns reading the transcript after listening to the automated telephone message, and then answer the questions provided. [Ss may also phone the pharmacy by calling 416-444-4445 to hear the automated message and practice using the star (*) and pound (#) options (as homework)].

Comprehension check:

·  Ss to answer questions by giving commands based on the automated telephone message. Take up correct answers in class.

Communicative Activity:

In pairs, Ss to describe a warning label they may have seen when they received a prescription for themselves, a child or family member. (Take with…. Use with…Stay away from…)

Then, Ss to use the handout with the various labels found on a prescription bottle. In pairs, Ss are to give each other a label and write down 10 questions with the appropriate answer: e.g. (i) How do I take this medication? Take with food. (ii) Can I keep this medication in the refrigerator? Do not refrigerate. Ss then practice asking each other these questions and giving the response.

These are some auxiliary labels, warning labels and patient information labels for use on drug vials, bottles, charts and records.
