Subject: But what about YOU?
Dear [First Name],
If you have dependents or people who count on you, you probably take pride in how you care for and provide for them. At times, you might not even really mind that your stress levels are super-high – as long as you’re doing right by everyone else.
Many of us operate on a daily basis like a swan – graceful and even serene on the surface, but desperately paddling like crazy underneath.
The sad fact is, we take our health for granted. That is, until we don’t have a whole lot of health.
We chose to ignore the warning signs, or are so busy that we don’t even realize their significance – the unexplained headache, the occasional blurry vision, the lethargy, weight gain, sleep issues, blood pressure, occasional dietary upsets, anxiety, or indigestion.
But what happens if the health that you take for granted tips over into illness territory? What happens if you can’t go to work, if you can’t drive anymore, if you can’t work on a computer screen? What happens to you and your family if you can no longer bring in an income?
It’s time to stop taking your health for granted.
Health shocks happen all the time. It’s just that so far (if you’re lucky), they’ve happened to ‘other people’.
You might say to yourself ‘it’s ok, things will calm down when I paydown the mortgage, or have the college fund built, or’… fill in the blank, whatever it is. You might tell yourself that once you have reached that imaginary goal, you’ll relax and spend time on your relationship, or catching up on those books you’ve been meaning to read.
But what happens if you die trying to reach that goal? Who will reward you for killing yourself trying to reach some goal that you thought would bring happiness?
Think I’m being dramatic?
Stop for a second, and call to mind those premature deaths that you will inevitably have heard about – relatives, friends or neighbors who have literally dropped dead in middle age or even younger. People who were taken before their time. We all know someone.
Think about that for a second – we ALL KNOW SOMEONE.
It’s not a random, far-off thing that happens to other people. It’s closer to all of us than we’re willing to accept.
So stop for a second. Breathe…
The good news is that it’s not too late to take care of your health. In fact, right now is the perfect time. It’s time to take care of you, so that you can take care of others. Self-care is never selfish. It’s only when our own vessel is full that we can contribute to others.
