STUDENT CONTRACT
- Introduction
1.1When you accept an offer of admission to the University a contractual relationship is established between you (the ‘Student’) and RoehamptonUniversity (the ‘University’) for the duration of your studies. It is important that you understand this document (the ‘Contract’) because it summarises the terms and conditions which the Student and the University accept are to govern their contractual relationship.
1.2Before accepting an offer of admission or registering as a student, you must read this Contract in full and raise any questions with the Student Enquiries Team if there is any part of it that you do not understand.

- Rules and regulations
2.1The Student will abide by the University’s rules, regulations, policies and codes that are in force at any given time. These include in particular regulations relating to academic study, learning and assessment; conduct and discipline; use of services and facilities; payment of fees and expenses; health and safety; and intellectual property,and include the documents listed below.

2.2The University will abide by its ownrules, regulations, policies and codes, and in this way will aim to treat the Student fairly. The University may at any time make changes to its rules, regulations, policies and codes, and will make reasonable and proportionate efforts to bring any significant changes to the attention of the Student before they take effect.
2.3The University and the Student will act in accordance with theIntellectual Property Policy. Under this policy, the University will normally own any intellectual property generated by the Student.
- Registration at the University
3.1Before registering at the University, the Student shall—
- comply with any conditions set out in the University’s offer of admission;
- inform the University of any criminal convictions in the circumstances set out in the Criminal Convictions Policy;
- where necessary, obtain the correct visa giving the entitlement to enter and remain in the UK for the purpose of study in accordance with the UK Immigration Rules.
3.2The University may terminate the registration of the Student if at any time—
- it is discovered that s/he has made false statements or omitted significant information in his/her application to the University;
- it is decided in accordance with the Criminal Convictions Policy that any criminal convictions the Student may have are incompatible with study at the University;
- the Student is unable to prove that s/he currently has the entitlement to enter and remain in the UK for the purpose of study in accordance with the UK Immigration Rules.
3.3The University may terminate at any time the registration of the Student where his/her programme of study is intended to provide access to a regulated profession and it is decided in accordance with either the Fitness to Practise Procedure or the Fitness to Teach Procedure that the Student is not fit to proceed on the programme.
- Fees
4.1The Student will pay, or make acceptable arrangements to pay to the University all deposits, fees, charges and expenses when these fall due.
4.2The University will publish information on deposits, fees, charges and expenses and will inform the Student of the date by which these shall be paid. The University will also refund any fees paid by the Student which may be refundable in accordance with the Tuition Fee Policy.
- Accommodation
5.1The Student will be responsible for making his/her own arrangements for accommodation and insurance of personal belongings for the duration of his/her studies. Any arrangements which are made through the University will be subject to separate agreements.
- Academic study
6.1The Student will—
- participate fully in his/her programme of study, including by attending and taking part in classes and activities, and by undertaking and submitting work within deadlines;
- notify the University and provide reasons if s/he is unable to attend or produce work;
- not seek to obtain, or assist another student in obtaining, an unfair advantage over other students in relation to his/her programme of study;
- submit his/her work to the TurnitinUK Plagiarism Detection Service when required to do so by the University. The Student permits the University and third parties authorised by the University to make and to retain copies of such work in order to assess it for originality and to compare it at a later date with future submissions.
6.2The University will provide a learning environment which, in its academic judgement and within its control, is appropriate for the Student’s programme of study.
6.3In order to introduce improvements and in response to changing circumstances the University at any time acting reasonably may alter, discontinue or cancel the Student’s programme of study,or merge or combine it with other programmes of study. In this event—
- If prior to registration the University significantly alters, discontinues or cancels the Student’s programme of study, then it will notify the Student in advance if reasonably possible and the Student shall be entitled to withdraw his/her application by written notice to the University. In these circumstances any deposits and fees paid by the Student will be refunded in full.
- If after registration the University significantly alters, discontinues or cancels the Student’s programme of study, then it will make a reasonable offer to the Student of alternative arrangements and take reasonable steps to mitigate any adverse effects for the Student.
- Communications
7.1The University will provide the Student with a Roehampton e-mail account for the duration of his/her studies and will use this when communicating with the Student by e-mail.
7.2The Student will—
- only use his/her Roehampton account when contacting University staff by e-mail, so that University staff can be reasonably sure of the Student’s identity;
- inform the University promptly about any changes of postal address and telephone number.
- Management of data
8.1The University will hold and process the Student’s personal data, including sensitive personal data, during and after the Student’s time at the University. The Student agrees to these data being processed in accordance with the Data Protection Policy. The University shall only process the Student’s data for those purposes and in the manner described in the Data Protection Policyand in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.
- If things go wrong
9.1If the Student wishes to make a complaint about the University, s/he will use the Student Complaints Procedure. This procedure has been devised to help to resolve any complaints by the Student as promptly, fairly and amicably as possible.
9.2Ifthe Student remains dissatisfied after following the Student Complaints Procedure to completion, s/hehas the right to ask the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education (OIA) to review the complaint.
9.3If the Student does not act in accordance with the terms and conditions set out in this Contract, or with any of the University’s rules, regulations, policies and codes that are in force at any given time, the University may take disciplinary action against the Student in accordance with the Student DisciplinaryRegulations. The Student agrees that all relevant staff will be advised of the outcome. One of the possible outcomes of disciplinary action is that the Student’s registration at the University may be terminated.
- Notices
10.1Any notice to the University sent by the Student under or in connection with this Contract shall be deemed to have been properly served if sent by first class post or e-mail to the University Secretary and Registrar at the following address.

10.2Any notice sent to the Student under or in connection with these terms and conditions shall be deemed to have been properly served if:
- sent by first class post to the last address provided to the University by the Student; or
- sent to the Student’s Roehampton e-mail account.
- General
11.1This Contract is only enforceable by the Student and the University. No other person shall have any rights in connection with this Contract.
11.2If any part of this Contract becomes illegal or invalid, the parts of the Contract which are not illegal or invalid shall remain in force.
11.3Neither the University nor the Student shall be liable for failure to perform any obligations under this Contract if such failure arises from circumstances beyond their reasonable control, including acts of God, war, terrorism, industrial disputes (including disputes involving the University's employees), fire, flood, tempest and national emergencies. If either the University or the Student seeks to rely on this Clause, then they shall ensure that the consequences of any failure to act in accordance with this Contract are kept to a minimum.
11.4Failure of either the University or the Student to enforce any part of this Contract shall not be construed as a waiver of a right to enforce that part of the Contract and shall not affect the right later to enforce any part of the Contract.
11.5This Contract is governed by the laws and jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
