Proudly presented by:
National Association of Elementary School Principals & Teachers College, Columbia University
for school leaders and principals with experience in mentoring and coaching
Through an alliance between the National Association of Elementary School Principals and Columbia University Teachers College, Program in Education Leadership, this two day workshop will incorporate the philosophy and curriculum of the NAESP National Mentor Certification Program and the research and expertise from Columbia University. It will expand the conceptual understanding of a novice principal’s growth and development through expert mentoring and coaching. This training will expand research opportunities and is leveraged to utilize mentoring and coaching best practices to focus on a principals’ role as he or she moves through the developmental stages of a school leadership. The end result is further developing highly skilled mentors to guide new school administrators through a concentrated, critical focus on school improvement and student achievement.
Incorporated into the workshop will be the Leadership Practices Inventory which has been used by over three million people in education and industry. The Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) is a first step to reaching your personal leadership best, clearly demonstrating what three decades of ongoing research affirms: that leadership is a practice that can be taught and learned by anyone. Effective leadership is not an inborn skill available to a select few. Rather it is a set of observable behaviors that, with deliberate practice, can help everyone be more effective and make more of a positive difference in the workplace, in the community, and in the world. Leaders will gain deep insight into how they see themselves as leaders, how others view them, and what actions they can take to improve their effectiveness.
The NAESP and Teachers College, Columbia University, Program in Education Leadership, Alliance creates a Tier Two level of training in which mentors have the opportunity to further hone their skills in the coaching process. The training is based on the experience and engagement in the leadership field, both nationally and internationally, by NAESP and Columbia University. It is research based and leverages leadership development with the observable behaviors of early career school-based leaders to create an environment in which student progress is the focus and quality support systems are in place.
NAESP recognizes that there is a significant linkage between school leadership and student outcomes and the mentor program reinforces the urgent need of providing early-career principals with leadership development and support. Leveraging our knowledge, experience, and direct connection to principals from around the country enables NAESP to be a leader in supporting and advocating for those committed to students and the overall success of the profession.
