John Bayley Keynote Speaker
UNEVEN OUTCOMES - THE ENGLISH DISEASE
England's place in the world picture and the pressure on schools in England -attainment, well-being, behaviour and special needs
John is best known for his series "Teaching with Bayley" originally made for Teachers' Television.
In his forty-five year career in education John has worked as a lecturer and research officer at London University, as a mainstream secondary teacher and then Head of the Learning Support Service and Pupil Referral Unit in Southwark. OFSTED described his leadership as "outstanding"
John has acted as a consultant to a number of local education authorities, and has worked with the London University Institute of Education and Teachers’ Television to produce training materials to support professional development in schools. John has collaborated with Save the Children on developing training materials for use in other countries. He is joint author with Lynda Haddock and Nick Peacey of I Shan't Say This Again: Training Teachers in Behaviour Management. John has worked as a consultant in hundreds of school.
John is currently lead organiser of the London RSA network on Inequality in Education Outcomes.

Overview: / This interactive workshop shares the implementation, and outcomes, of GHLL’s positive playtimes practice.With the introduction of zoned playgrounds, that directly link to the ‘5 ways of wellbeing’, incidents of isolation and poor behaviour have dropped dramatically. These zones not only provide a wellbeing boost for all pupils, but also through planning with the midday supervisors, enable more vulnerable pupils to get targeted boosts in their specific areas of need. This Positive Playgrounds practice not only gives schools the tools to target pupils who need wellbeing boosts, but also shares what wellbeing is, why it is important and how to assess the wellbeing impact you currently have on your pupils.

Watermoor School supports a higher than average number of students with specific and complex needs, including a significant group with SEMH difficulties. We hope that after our workshop you will be able to take away a few practical ideas for your setting and have time to reflect upon key principles to influence your future practice. There is no easy answer or no quick fix but we will share our stories with you, including when things haven’t worked!
