After submitting the application, a current board member will contact you to schedule a one-hour interview for late February or early March. (To do this, you will use an electronic sign-up process.) This interview is a required part of the application process.
Following the interview, we will send you editing tasks that simulate essential board work. You will have 48 hours to return these assignments to HER. Given the 48 hour turnaround time, please plan accordingly when scheduling the interview.
Criteria for Board MembershipThe Board will review all aspects of an applicant’s candidacy. Criteria for selection to Board membership include:
1. Knowledge of a body of literature, field, and methodology
2. Critical thinking and analysis
●ability to analyze articles, see strengths and weaknesses
●can the candidate understand and respect authors through the academic writing process and product, and engage with the manuscript?
3. Collaboration
●ability to work on teams, most work done in pairs, need to be able to make decisions collaboratively in work situations
●ability to work in groups of 10-14 to decide matters of policy and manuscripts, and contribute to that process
●openness to new ideas, new ways of thinking
4. Contribute to the Board’s overall composition
●goal is to have a breadth of knowledge in all areas of education
●want a well-rounded Board, with a variety of viewpoints and wide diversity of perspectives, background, and experience
5. Respect for and commitment to scholarly publishing
●taking seriously the work of the Board

All applicants to the HER Board require approval in writing from the student's advisor. On the Submittable website, you will enter confirmation that you have discussed your prospective application with your advisor and that an e-mail from your advisor approving your application will be sent to the HER Editorial Board Co-chairs at .
Please note that applicants currently on academic probation are not eligible for selection to the HER Board.
SECTION 3A: COMMITMENT TO THE BOARD
Membership on the board for this cohort is a two year commitment starting in June 2018 and ending in June 2020 with weekly Thursday meetings.
There are several weeks of scheduled Board vacations including major holidays and special events. The vacation dates for academic year 2018–2019 are tentatively scheduled for the following dates:

●December 20 + 27, 2018 + January 3, 2019 (Winter Break)
●March 21, 2019 (HGSE Spring Recess)
●The Board also decides whether to meet during the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association each Spring. For 2019, the annual meeting is scheduled forFriday, April 5 – Tuesday, April 9, Toronto, ON, CANADA.

The policy manual of the Harvard Educational Review Editorial Board states the following:
Attendance at weekly Board meetings is critical and Board members should be well-aware of the commitment Board membership entails. As professionals, our expectation is that attendance at Board meetings is the highest priority, and that absences may occur only under extenuating circumstances.
As a matter of policy, Editors are granted up to two absences per academic term, with allowances for medical and research leave for more extended durations of absence.
In the box below, please briefly identify any extended dates or time periods between June 2018 and June 2020 that you expect you will not be able to attend Board meetings. Please include reasons for the absences (e.g., academic commitments, travel plans, extracurricular commitments, jobs, conference attendance) so that we can be aware of any accommodations we might be able to offer support with early in the onboarding process:

Please write a statement of purpose addressing the following questions in no more than a total of 2 double-spaced pages (12-point font, 1-inch margins):

SECTION 6: WRITING SAMPLE
Please submit a writing sample of 3-10 double-spaced pages (12-point font, 1-inch margins). Please keep in mind that this sample will be evaluated for its clarity, presentation, and cohesiveness of content/argument. This writing sample can be any kind of unpublishedwriting (e.g., research proposal, a literature review, analytic paper, or reflection) that you think will convey your strengths to the Board. You may submit a piece that is 3-10 pages in its entirety or you may excerpt 3-10 consecutive pages from a larger work. First and second year students often use papers or memos completed for coursework (e.g. essays for pro-sem), while more advanced doctoral students often use writing produced for degree milestones.

If you believe your grades do not give an accurate picture of your academic history, please attach a brief explanation to your application. Only your graduate program grades from Harvard will be reviewed, so there is no need to submit transcripts from other programs/universities.
HER takes confidentiality seriously and following review of your application will destroy all electronic and hard copies of your transcript.

SECTION 8: RECOMMENDATIONS
Please list the names, addresses, and contact information—including phone numbers and e-mail addresses—of two people who will provide recommendations on your behalf. The recommendation form is available in the downloadable application package. Recommendations should be submitted by Friday, February 23, 2018 at the very latest.
You will be responsible for asking your recommenders to write on your behalf and following up with them to be sure that they provide their recommendations on time. Your recommenders should e-mail their letters and forms directly to the HER Editorial Board at . We strongly suggest that your recommendations come from people who can speak about your academic background and have firsthand knowledge of your writing and analytical skills and ability to collaborate.
