BY-LAWS

PURPOSE

The Johnson State College Athletics Hall of Fame (hereafter referred to as the Hall of Fame) is an affiliated organization of the Alumni Associationof Johnson State College. It is the purpose of the Hall of Fame Board of Directors (hereafter referred to as the Board)to perpetuate the accomplishments of the College’s distinguished athletes, people who have contributed significantly either to the development of these athletes or to the excellence of the athletic program, and teams who by their record have provided the College with lasting leadership and success. Each of these awards are intended to bring honor and distinction to Johnson State College and to support in all ways possible the College’s intercollegiate athletic programs while reinforcing a sense of history and tradition.

MEMBERSHIP

There are three levels of membership into the Athletic Hall of Fame:

  • Regular Membership
  • Honorary Membership
  • Team Membership

Regular Membership

  • Individuals must have graduated from Johnson State College or another accredited college or university (and must have attended JSC for no less than two years) and have clearly established themselves as one of the College’s elite athletes
  • Distinguished themselves by their exceptional athletic participation (All-American, All-New England, NCAA/NAIA All Star, North Atlantic Conference, Conference MVP/All-Star, Record Holder, Leading Scorer, etc.)
  • Contributed to the success of the team and College by demonstrating positive citizenship and teamwork which acts as a role model for other student athletes
  • Continued after graduation to distinguish themselves to their organizations through outstanding professional/career achievements, community service and citizenship
  • Serve as examples of outstanding character, courage and leadership which the College seeks to develop in its athletic program

Honorary Membership

  • Coaches, administrators and friends of the College who have made outstanding contributions to the College's athletic program; for a period of not less than five (5) years
  • Individuals who have significantly contributed to the development of student-athletes who qualify for regular membership; for a period of not less than five (5) years

Team Membership

  • Teams which have distinguished themselves on the playing field (outstanding win-loss record, league championship, NCAA/NAIA tournament participation)
  • Teams which have brought honor to the College
  • Teams which have exemplified leadership, character, courage and positive citizenship
  • The induction of a team shall not preclude the separate induction of one or more of its members
  • When a team is selected, one representative of the team shall accept the award

NOMINATION PROCESS

  • Individuals or teams will be eligible for selection anytime after the 5th anniversary of their graduation or team participation.
  • Nominations will be accepted by the Board at any time prior to the selection meeting as long as there is adequate supportive documentation upon which an informed decision can be made.
  • Anyone who nominates an individual or team should provide documentation (records, statistics, occupational information) and submit that with a completed Nomination Form to support their nomination.
  • Individuals who are nominated but not selected will automatically be re-nominated or withdrawn by the Board on an annual basis.
  • A person considered for induction for three consecutive years, but not selected, will be removed from future consideration.
  • The nominees shall be selected by mid-May each year.
  • A picture and biographical sketch of each person elected for induction shall be provided to the JSC Athletic Director.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

  • Selections will be made once a year by the Board.
  • Selections will be based upon the documentation provided to the committee and any other supporting information the committee may have (College records, yearbook information)
  • A quorum of the Board (7) must be present and nominees must receive a majority (2/3) of the votes.
  • The Boardwill attempt to induct individuals during the anniversary year of their graduation in increments of 5 or 10 years; however individuals will be selected on the merits of their accomplishments, not the year of graduation.

NUMBER OF INDUCTEES WHICH MAY BE SELECTED EACH YEAR

  • Regular Membership-not more than five (5) individuals
  • Honorary Membership-one (1)
  • Team Membership-one (1)
  • In any given year there may not be more than six (6) individuals and one (1) team inducted

INDUCTION CEREMONY

  • The induction ceremony date will be established by the Board.
  • Nominees selected for induction shall be present at the ceremony if at all possible (induction can be postponed for a year if necessary).
  • Inductees (Regular and Honorary) will receive a plaque at the time of their induction which will include their name, class and date of induction.
  • Team members will receive a Hall of Fame Certificate
  • A biographical summary will be included in the Hall of Fame Banquet Program which recognizes the accomplishment of all the inductees.
  • Names of inductees shall be inscribed on a plaque in SHAPE.
  • Photos of the current year’s inductees shall be hung in SHAPE.

ARTICLE I - BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND OFFICERS

  1. An eleven (11) member Board of Directors shall govern the Hall of Fame.
  1. The Board shall be comprised of the following members:
  2. Up to six (6) Hall of Fame members elected by the members of the Hall of Fame.
  3. A member of the Alumni Association shall be appointed by the President of the Alumni Council.
  4. A JSC faculty member shall be nominatedby the Director of Athletics, with the appointment andapproval of the College President.
  5. The immediate past Chairperson shall serve for one year as an ex-officio voting member.
  6. The JSC Director of Athletics shall be a voting member
  7. Two current coaches, one representing a men’s team and one representing a women’s team, shall be appointed by the Director of Athletics.
  8. Each member shall serve for three (3) years.

3. The Board of Directors shall elect from its members a Chairpersonand a Vice Chair, who will serve for a period of three (3) years

4. The Assistant Athletics Director for Internal and External Communications will act as Secretary/Treasurer as a non-voting member.

5. If any member of the Board is unable or unwilling to complete theirterm of office, the Board, at its next scheduled meeting, will appoint a new member or Chairperson to fill the unexpired term.

ARTICLE II - DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE OFFICERS

  1. The Chairperson shall be the chief presiding officer of the Board. He/she will be responsible for calling all Board meetings and the Annual Meeting; appointing all standing committees and will serve as an ex-officio member of all committees.
  1. The Vice Chair shall preside in the absence of the Chairperson.
  1. The Secretary/Treasurer will act as the Recording Secretary at all Board meetings, as well as the Annual Meeting, and will record all official actions taken at those meetings. Further, the Secretary/Treasurer will be responsible for all official correspondence to the members of the Hall of Fame and will be the person responsible for all Hall of Fame funds. He/she will provide the Board with written minutes of the preceding meeting as well as regular financial statements that must be approved by the Board. The Secretary/Treasurer shall maintain both an electronic file and hard copy minutes, which shall be brought to all Board meetings.
  1. The Secretary/Treasurer and the College’s Athletic Director shall deposit all Hall of Fame funds in a restricted Johnson State College Hall of Fame account. Disbursement of funds shall be made upon approval of at least two of the following persons; the Chairperson, the Secretary/Treasurer and/or the College’s Athletic Director. Each year the Board shall review and approve the income, expenses, and disbursement decisions for the previous years.

ARTICLE III - HALL OF FAME MEETINGS

  1. Meetings of the Board of Directors
  1. The Chairperson is responsible for convening all meetings of the Board of Directors. He/she will ensure that written or electronic notice is provided all Board members of a scheduled meeting at least two (2) weeks prior to the date of the meeting.
  1. A minimum of seven (7) members of the Board, to include either the Chairperson or Vice Chair must be present at all meetings in order to constitute a quorum, without which no official Hall of Fame business or action may be conducted. Members attending via conference call are part of the quorum. When there is no quorum, work can be completed and sent electronically to all members for an action vote.
  1. Annual Meeting of the Hall of Fame Membership
  1. Date of the annual meeting of the membership and induction of new members is set by the Board. Four weeks’ notice of the meeting shall be given to members via eNewsletter and on Athletic website.
  1. A quorum is considered seven (7) members of the Hall of Fame membership. It can consist of electronic media, teleconference, or in-person attendance.

ARTICLE IV – AMENDMENT OF BYLAWS

Bylaws may be amended on the recommendation of the Board to the annual meeting of the Hall of Fame membership, by 2/3 vote of members present.
