Course Syllabus for MA23101 Basic Mathematics 5 : M3

Course Description:
The subject requires skills in creativity, logic, and systematic and methodical thinking in the following topics:
Surface area and Volume.Finding the surface area and volume of various solids: e.g. prisms, cylinders, pyramids, cones, and spheres.Conversions and applications of volume.
Estimation.The estimation of measurements in various situations.
Linear graphs. Graphs representing linear representations between two quantities and graphs of linear equations in two variables.
Systems of Linear Equations.Solving systems of linear equations in two variables and its applications.
- Similarity. The concept of similar triangles, it mathematical applications, and applications in daily situations.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the course, students will have demonstrated:
An acquired mathematical skills and processes about solving various problems in finding surface area and volume of solids.
An understanding about numerical concepts and applications of estimation.
A knowledge, understanding, and mathematical skills and application of linear graphs.
An application of knowledge about systems of linear equations.
An appropriate knowledge and application about similarity.
Learning Procedures:
- Lectures. Theseareseenasaverytime-efficientwayforstudentstolearnpartofthelargematerialinvolvedinthecorpusofmathematics.
- Exercisesessions.Theseareorganizedmostoftenintandemwithlectures.Theyoccurasgroupswithsupervision,orindividuallyashomeworkwithsubsequentsupervisionoftheresults.
- Homework.Whiledemandingonthetimeofthe teacher,homeworkisclearlyoneofthemosteffectivewaysinwhichstudentscanbeencouragedtoexplorethelimitsoftheircapabilities.
- Projects.Thesearedoneindividuallyorinsmallgroups,andtypicallyinvolveputtingtogethermaterialfromdifferentsub-fieldstosolvemorecomplicatedproblems.Smallgroupprojectscanhelptodeveloptheabilitytodoteamwork(identifiedasanimportanttransferableskill).Theprojectsmayinvolvesignificantcomputationalelements,asinthecaseofthecomputationalcompetencesreferredtoabove.
