Setting Essay

Ms. Graves

2/11/11

I woke up in the middle of nowhere. All I saw was a wasteland full of sand, dead trees, and more sand. My vision was still a bit blurry, but I knew it was sand because of the feel of it. The air was dry as if the air too was made of sand. It was hard to breathe, but after a bit, my breathing was normal.

When I fully regained my sight, I was able to see what looked like castle. I thought to myself, who would want to rule over a wasteland? Then it hit me. Where was I? This place reminded me of a desert. The only thing was that weird was that it looked like it was nighttime, but I was able see clearly because it was bright. Also, it wasn’t hot or cold.

I decided that the logical thing to do was to head towards the castle. So I got up, but once I took my first step, I instantly fell. My body felt as if I was carrying several boulders on my back and had small weights tied to my wrists and ankles. It was as if the gravity was multiplied by five compared to earth’s gravity. Getting up was easy. The hard part was to stay up. I got back up and slowly trotted towards the castle.

From my distance, it looked like the castle was about five miles away. I thought it would take me about two hours to get there, but by the time I actually got there, three days had passed. And when I got there, I thought there would be an entrance. Man was I wrong. It was only a wall with no doors or gates. Just a gray wall. I probably walked for about three hours looking for anyway to get in. But there was no way in.

Right when I was about to lie down, there was a blast from about ten yards away. I ran to check it out and found a giant hole in the wall. This hole looked deep because I couldn’t see the end.

I decided to go in since it was better than staying outside. I don’t know how, but just like outside, it was bright inside the hole. From the outside, it was darker than the sky itself.

I kept walking until I came to a staircase on my left and a door on my right. The door looked real old. The knob lost its shine due to over excessive use. I opened the door and peeked in. it looked like an empty warehouse. I closed the door. The staircase, just like the door, looked like it was a century old. There were pieces of steps that were missing. There was a railing to hold on to, but it was really rusty. I took the staircase up to another door.

This door led to a city. It was beautiful. There were markets, horses, camels, people buying things, and kids playing around. While I looked around, I noticed something that was really strange. Outside the castle, the sky was dark. But in here, it was like the middle of a summer day. There were clouds as white as snow and the sun was as bright as ever.
