Objectives:

  • to revise the vocabulary and structures on the topic “Christmas”,
  • to develop reading skills;
  • to identify an object with the help of an oral description of it;
  • to write post cards,

Pupils will practice:

  • listening and watching for specific information;

  • singing a song.

Materials:

  • Handouts (texts about Christmas, Santa Clause’s letter, tasks), flashcards, a big box with presents, song “Santa Clause is coming to town”.

Procedure

  1. Greeting.

Teacher: Good morning, boys and girls! I am glad to see you!

  1. Warming up

Teacher: What day is it today?

What season is it now?

Do you like winter?

What can we do in winter? (play snowballs, make snowman, ski, skate, sleigh).

What holidays do we celebrate in winter? (New Year, Christmas, St. Nickolas Day. St. Valentine’s Day etc.)

Today we shall speak about Christmas.

  1. Phonetic drill

Teacher: First, let us read the tong twister

Santa’s sleigh slips so swiftly through the snow.

Rub out the words one by one. Let the children to read all sentence as quickly as it possible.

  1. Revising the vocabulary

Teacher: There are many things and words which are connected with Christmas. What are they? (Christmas tree, Santa Clause, toys to decorate the tree, balls, stars, angels, lights, Christmas cards, presents, Robin, Christmas pudding, holly).

Using the flashcards elicit these words.

Teacher: Your hometask was to read the small texts about Christmas traditions.

Christmas Day
Christmas Day is on the 25th of December. English people celebrate this holiday with big dinners. Children have got a lot of fun. They play under Christmas trees, find presents in their Christmas stockings, eat Christmas pudding.

VII. Hometask - Writing a postcard (Task 5).

T: I’m sure now you know a lot about Christmas and New Year. One of the traditions is writing postcards to your relatives, to your friends. Let’s write a postcard to…Father Frost. Ask him to bring you a present and describe it. Don’t forget to thank Father Frost and Snowmaiden. Then show us your cards and read them.
