Announcing the 2nd annual Maryland Institutefor Leadership 2014-2015program, designed to address the needs and develop the skills of Maryland’s leaders in post-secondary education. With the tremendous success of the inaugural MILHE program (2012-2013),Howard Community College ispleased once again to serve as hosts for this important statewide leadership development program. Please join us for this next session and continue to help create a strong and well-connected community of higher education leaders!

Who should attend? Higher education leaders and emerging leaders in community colleges and universities throughout Maryland. Participants come from a wide range of levels including vice-presidents, deans, coordinators, directors, chairs, and supervisors, and from across areas such as student services, human resources, finance, academics, and continuing education.

What are the program components? The Academy for Leadership and Development, also known as the Chair Academy,will deliver the curriculum and serve as facilitators of the program. The Academy builds training around a foundation of leadership research, theory, skills, and best practices and addresses both the individual and organizational dimensions in which learning is transformational, complex, and sustainable.

Components include:

  • Nine days of leadership training and development sessions provided over an academic year (see below for dates);
  • A practicum between training sessions during which participants select a college mentor, implement an Individual Professional Development Plan (IPDP), and receive support and guidance from an Academy coach;
  • Online opportunities for participants to engage in dialogue with fellow participants;
  • Pre/interim/post completion of online assessments designed to measure changes in leadership behavior.

Four basic criteria are incorporated into the design and delivery of all leadership modules:

  • Does the instruction actively engage participants and address their strengths and learning style?
  • Is the information presented meaningful and relevant?
  • Will the information be useful and applicable in the job setting?
  • Are the training outcomes measurable?

When will this program begin? There are three 3-day leadership development sessions being planned:

Aug. 11-13, 2014

Jan.12-14, 2015

June 22-24, 2015

Participants attend all three sessions in addition to engaging in the academic year-long practicum. All sessions will be held at Howard Community College in Columbia, MD.

Program costs? The registration fee is $1,800.00 per participant which includes the three sessions of training, leadership manuals, and all aspects of the practicum. Travel, catering, and lodging, if needed, are additional costs. Additional details will be available beginning Dec.2013 at under: Upcoming Foundational Programs – Maryland Institute/MILHE.
