Military Personnel Honored at Council Meeting

At the May 19th Battle Ground City Council meeting 19 young men and women from the community were recognized for their decision to serve in the United States Armed Forces. Each of the enlistees was presented with an American flag from the City and a department Challenge Coin from Clark County Fire & Rescue.

Deputy Mayor Philip Johnson introduced each of the enlistees who spoke about his or her military assignment, goals, and family members, of whom many were in attendance.

Operations

Firefighters Graduate State Academy

The District’s 4 new firefighters, hired in January as a result of a SAFER grant, were honored at a graduation ceremony on April 18th at the Washington State Joint Criminal Justice Center in Burien.

The 13-week academy is held at the Washington State Fire Training Center in North Bend. Paul Bustamante, Josh Alexander, Keith

Graham, and Dustin Bross will be assigned to a regular shift during their year-long probationary period.

Regional Fire Authority Planning Committee

The Regional Fire Authority (RFA) Planning Committee has drafted its recommendation for the oversight of the new RFA if created. The 7-member governance board would be comprised of 2 representatives appointed by the CCF&R commissioners, 2 representatives appointed by the City of Battle Ground council, 1 representative appointed by the City of Woodland council, 1 representative appointed by the Fire District 2 commissioners, and 1 at-large representative appointed by the other 6 board members. The at-large appointee would be required to run for the position at the next regular election.

The Committee’s recommendation for the oversight board will be incorporated into the overall RFA Plan. When finalized, the plan will be submitted to the voters for approval or rejection. Approval requires a simple majority of the electorate.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES

City of Vancouver Issues Ambulance RFP

The request for proposals (RFP) for ambulance service for the City of Vancouver and EMS District 2, which includes the cities of Battle Ground, Ridgefield, La Center, and Woodland, is currently out to bid. A mandatory pre-bid conference was held on May 14th for interested bidders. American Medical Response (AMR), Metro West, and Falck Ambulance were the only attendees. Proposals are expected by months end.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH and PUBLIC EDUCATION

The District conducted four station tours and three engine tours during April.

Smoke Detector Installation

Fire Department personnel installed more than

70 new smoke detectors in Woodland Mobile Estates in April. The 10-year detectors were obtained through a Public Education grant through FEMA. The District obtained 250 of the new-style detectors and has been concentrating on mobile home parks in the Woodland, Battle Ground, La Center and Ridgefield areas.
